    This war had the Bulgarians, Serbians, and other nations fighting against the Ottoman Empire. 2 months later, the Ottomans then signed an armistice with Bulgaria, Montenegro, and Serbia on December 3rd. A peace treaty was signed in London on May 30, 1913, which limited the Ottoman Empire of power. But on June 29-30, 1913, Bulgarian soldiers had attacked Greek and Serbian positions in Macedonia. Greeks and Serbian armies fought back to push the Bulgarians back to their pre-war positions.

    Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated on June 28, 1914, in the capital of Sarajevo. He was assassinated by a Bosnian nationalist named Gavrilo Princip. Archduke's intentions in Sarajevo were to inspect the imperial armed forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina. After his death, Austria-Hungary blamed the Serbian government for the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. This led to Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia on July 28.

    World War I started on June 7, 1914. Events that led to this first World War was the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. As Serbia blamed it on Austria-Hungary for the killing of Archduke Ferdinand. Austria wanted to declare war but they were waiting on Germany's leader Kaiser Wilhelm II to confirm that Germany would be on their side if they declared war. Once Germany confirmed that they would, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia and the first World War had begun.

    This battle took place on February 19, 1915, when British Admiralty, Winston Churchill ordered a Naval attack on the Dardanelles. This did not go to plan as the Ottoman Empire retaliated and in return destroyed three of the British battleships. Soon after on April 25, 1915, the allies decided to invade the Gallipoli Peninsula in attempts to overrun the Ottoman Empire. This did not go as planned which resulted in heavy casualties and a retreat called by the allies.

    The Lusitania was a Luxury British ship that would sail the Atlantic Ocean from Europe to the United States. As Germany tried to gain control of the shipping lanes, they failed, so they declared the seas around Britain as a war zone and would shoot down any ships that came into view. As Lusitania departed from New York to make its way to Liverpool. On May 7, the Lusitania was struck by a German U-boat which resulted in the death of 1,198 people and 761 survivors. This angered several countries.

    The Battle of Verdun (Wakefield, 2018)

    The battle of Verdun took place on the Western Front between the French and German forces. Germany's plan was to use about 1200 artillery weapons and limit the use of infantrymen to reduce the number of casualties. As the battle went on, British forces decided to increase the amount of artillery at Verdun. This resulted in the Germans gaining as many casualties as the French. The battle ended on December 18 due to weather conditions and the German's plans had failed.

    The battle of Somme was the deadliest battle of World War I. Both allies and Germany suffered great numbers of casualties. The battle also introduced new weaponry in the deployment of the tank. This vehicle was used to inflict more damage on the Germans but most of the tanks broke down. This battle would soon come to a halt as winter conditions made it difficult for allied forces to advance and break the German lines.

    The Mark I tank was deployed to battle on September 15, 1916, by the British. This massive tank seated 8 crew members and weighed 28 tons with a max speed of 5.9km/h. The Mark I tank was a step in the right direction when it came to technology. Although it was difficult for the crew members to operate the vehicle. They still got the job done.

    The Zimmerman note was written by German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmerman offering Mexico America's land if they joined the Germans. If America joined the allies, Germany would supply Mexico with artillery to gain back their lost land in Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. The British deciphered this note and handed it over to the U.S. in late February. President Wilson was notified about this and brought it up with Congress. This would then lead to the U.S. entering World War I.

    While the war was going on. America planned to stay neutral with both sides. But at the same time, they were increasing their Naval military in case any actions had to be taken. As time went on, the British intercepted the Zimmerman note and started to decipher it. The note stated that Mexico would get a piece of America if they helped out. President Wilson was notified about this information and asked Congress for permission to go to war against Germany. As a result, the U.S. entered the war.

    The Russian Revolution started when the lower classes decided to revolt in 1917. This resulted in a riot which then Tsar Nicholas II; the leader of Russia at the time, sent the army to contain the riot. This took a turn when the army decided that they didn't want to harm the Russian people. Soon after, the army joined the riot and made Tsar Nicholas II give up his position as leader. As a result, Russia was taken over by the Petrograd Soviet and the provisional government.

    As Russia was led by Vladimir Lenin, he had different plans in store for Russia. Vladimir wanted Russia to become a Communist country so the first step he took was to withdraw from the war. Russia and the Central Powers signed the Treaty of Brisk-Litovsk on March 3, 1918. As a result of this, Ukraine, Finland, Polish and Baltic territories were handed over to Germany and Germany had to take their military forces out of Russian lands.

    The Battle of Chateau-Thierry (Rickard, 2007)

    The Battle of Chateau-Thierry consisted of the Americans fighting alongside the French to push back the Germans. They did this by deploying the American 2nd and 3rd divisions. The 3rd division was assigned by General John Pershing to defend the bridges in Chateau-Thierry. While accomplishing this mission, the 3rd division then set a counter attack against the Germans that crossed the Marne. This marked a victory for the Americans and French.

    This horrific battle took place on September 26, 1918. Germany had fallen back to the Argonne Forest while the Americans and French were advancing from different positions. Day after day, both American and French soldiers were advancing, coming closer and closer to clearing out all the Germans. More than a million soldiers had participated in these battles. In the end, the Argonne Forest was cleared of Germans on October 31st.

    The armistice took place on November 11, 1918. This stopped the battles on the frontline with the allied forces and the Germans. Germans wanted an armistice because their military was losing the war. Another reason the Germans wanted an armistice was that their hungry citizens started to rebel against Germany. The effect of this armistice brought relief, and celebration to the allied forces.

    The Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in Paris by the Allies. This Treaty stripped Germany of all its powers and land. They lost 13% of their territory and 10% of their population. The Treaty meant that Germany had to pay for their damages and accept the fact that they started World War I. This whole Treaty aimed to prevent something like this from happening again and at the same time trying to limit Germany's power.

    The League of Nations was a group that was created after World War I to prevent countries from going to war. This organization acted as a peacekeeper when problems would occur. The organization lasted until the beginning of World War II. World War II ended the League of Nations because League members like Denmark, Norway, Luxemburg, and France all fell into Hitler's control. All of this would lead to the fall of the League of Nations.
