In the years before World War I, many nations in Europe made alliances with other nations. This insured that if one nation entered a war, its allies would also. European nations were given a feeling of safety knowing they had other nations backing them if they entered World War I. -
Assassination of Franz Ferdinand
On July 28th, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife were shot and killed while visiting Sarajevo. Some consider this assasitnation to be the cause of the outbreak World War I one month late. But it is not that simple, as there were many complex causes of World War I. -
The War Begins!
On July 28th, 1914, war breaks out in Europe with the Assasination of the Archduke of Austria being the spark. The major European powers had been building up their armies and alliances for years, meaning only one thing would happen in the future, war. -

The Lusitania Sinks
On May 7th, 1915, a German U-Boat, in other words a submarine, indentifies and sunk the Lusitania. 1,198 civilians were killed, with 128 of them being American. This event turned many nations against Germany, including the United States. Germany agreed to restrict their submarine warfare. -
German Zimmerman Telegram is Dispatched
In the beginning of 1917, Germany sent a telegram to Mexico urging them to declare war against the United States. This telegram was intercepted by British Intelligence and ultimately was the last push the United States needed to enter the war. -
Germany Resumes Unrestricted Submarine Warfare
In 1917, Germany decided to resume unrestricted submarine warfare, knowing that this meant the US would enter the war. This decision also was a part of the reason Germany sent Mexico the Zimmerman note. -
The US Enters the War
On April 6th of 1917, the United States declared war on Germany. This was due to both but not only to Germany resuming unrestriced warfare and the Zimmerman Telegram encouraging Mexico to declare war on the US. -
Congress Passes the Service Act of 1917
In 1917, Congress passed the Selective Service Act of 1917. This act authorized the federal government's power to create an army by forcing young men to enlist in the military. This was in preperation for the United States participation in World War I. -
The War Ends
On the 11th of November in 1918, Germany, having a now weak and depleted army, agreed to an armistice. This put an
end to the four years of war that left 10 million dead and injured 21 million more. -
Treaty of Versailles
The Treaty of Versailles, signed on the 28th of June in the Versailles Palace, put an end to World War I. It was written mostly by the Allied powers. Many thought it was far to harsh on the Germany, others thought it would prevent war with Germany in the future. -

The Great Depression was the time after the Stock Market Crash of 1929. The economy crashed and left an alarming amount of Americans unemployed. It is thought to have ended when the US entered WWII, which made the economy boom once again. -
World Was II Begins
On September 1st, 1939 Germany attacked Poland, marking the beginning of yet another world war. Germany's increased power after the Treaty of Versailles was owed to Adolf Hilter's rise to power.
