First Battle of the Marne
The First Battle of the Marne was considered one of the most significant battles in WWI because if they French lost, then they would not be able to participate in the war as long as they did. The Germans advanced near Paris but the Battle ended in the French's Victory. It also set the stage for trench warfare. -
Siege of Tsingtao
The Siege of Tsingtao was an attack on a German port in China by Japan and Great Britain. The British saw that the German port as a threat and decided to elimnate it. The Japanese were asked to help, and later the Japanese issued an ultimatum, stating that Germany was to transfer Tsingtao into Japanese control. After the Germans lost, Japan took 4700 POW. -
Battle of Sarikamish
The Russians captured Sarikamish in the Russo-Turkish War in 1878. The Ottoman Empire tried to take it back, which ended in defeat. The Ottoman Empire, which was outfitted for speed, was ill-prepared for the harsh winter. It was part of a series of battles in the Caucauses Front where the Ottoman Empire was taking back land it lost. -
Battle of Jarrab
The Battle of Jarrab was a territorial battle between the Al Sa'ud and the Al Rashid. It was a battle between the British-supported Sa'udis and the Ottoman-supported Rashidis.
The main significance of the battle was the death of Captain William Shakespear, which diminished the relationship between Ibn Sa'ud and the British, changing the course of the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire instead of the sultans. -
Siege of Van
The Siege of Van was a rebellion against the Ottoman Empire. The uprising was unplanned by the civilians however. Historians pointed out that some Ottoman officials put armed Armenian resistance in the population. This was so that the Ottoman Empire had an excuse to deport Armerians from the Empire. Unexpectedly, the civilians won and drove out the Ottomans. -
Battle of Bolimów
The Battle of Bolimów was an inconclusive battle between the Germans and the Russians. This was the first battle that the Germans tried to use chlorine gas, but it was inneffective. The cold weather caused the gas to freeze, and the wind blew the gas back onto the Germans. It preceded the Second Battle of the Masurian Lakes. -
Battle of Verdun
The Battle of Verdun was one of the largest battles in World War I. It lasted 9 months, 3 weeks, and 6 days. The German strategy was to inflict mass casualties to the French and to weaken the French Army. It ended in French victory, though there were over 1,270,000 casualities in total. -
Battle of the Somme
The Battle of the Somme was an inconclusive battle between the British and French against the Germans. The first tanks were used and air power was very important, as both sides were fighting by a river. It was considered one of the bloodiest battles in the world, with over 1,600,000 casualties and deaths in total. -
Battle of Passchendaele
The Battle of Passchendaele, or the Third Battle of Ypres, was the Allies against the German army. The Allies tried to capture the Belgian City Ypres. They tried to shut down the railways that supplied the German Army. But because of weather, the Allies had to withdraw. -
Battle of Mahiwa
The Battle of Mahiwa was the Germans against the British and Nigerians. The British tried to seperate a group of Germans from the main army by flanking it with Nigerians. The Battle lasted four days and the Germans were forced to retreat because they used up so many supplies. -
Battle of Cambrai
The Battle of Cambrai was a British battle against the Germans. Cambrai was an important supply point for the Germans, and capturing the town would threaten the German backline. Numerous developments evolved at Cambrai, such as predicted artillery fire, sound ranging, infantry infiltration tactics, infantry-tank coordination and close air support. -
Battle of Baku
The Battle of Baku was between the Ottoman-Azerberjani and the British-Armerian-Russians. The battle was fought as a conclusive part in the Caucasus Campaign. The Ottoman won, and later established an agreement that gave the Germans one quarter of Baku's oil. The battle also preluded the Armenian-Azerberjani war.
