  • Hollywood, California, becomes the center of movie production in the U.S.

    Fiml makers moved West in order to escape Edison's patents. The weather in Calorfrnia was ideal for qucik film making. There was also access to a variety of settings.
  • Assassiniation of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

    Archduke was heir to the Austrian throne. The assassination took place while he was visiting the Bosian capital Sarajevo. He and his wife were shot by Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian nationalist.
  • Germany declares war.

    Germnay declares war on France and Russia. Great Britain declares war on Germany and Austria-Hungary. It was partly in resposne to Ferdinand's assassination.
  • Fisrt transcontinental telephone call.

    It was made by Alexander Graham Bell to his assistant, who was in Sanfrancisco while Bell was in New York City. The distnace between the phones was 3,400 miles. President Wilson and the mayors of both states were also involved in the call.
  • German U-boats sink the "Lusitania"

    1,198 people were killed when she ship sank. The ship was identified and torpedoed by the German U-boat U-20 and sank in 18 minutes. There were 761 survivors.
  • Theory of relativity

    Albert Einstein proposes his general theory of relativity. It determined that the laws of physics are the same for all non-accelerating observers. When first published, relativity superseded a 200-year-old theory of mechanics created primarily by Isaac Newton.
  • The battles of Verdun and Somme

    The battles claimed the life of millions. Verdun was the longest single battke of the war. Tha battle of Some took place in consequence to Verdun.
  • Wilson reelected

    Woodrow Wilson is reelected as President of the United States. The United States presidential election of 1916 was the 33rd quadrennial presidential election. After a hard-fought contest, Wilson defeated Hughes by nearly 600,000 votes.
  • Draft set up in U.S.

    The Selective Service Act set up the draft. The soldiers were being recruited to fight agaisnt the Germans. The Act was canceled with the end of the war on November, 1918.
  • United States declres war on Germany

    Germany's renewal of unrestricted submarine warfare and the revelation of a proposed German plot to ally with Mexico against the US prompted Wilson's action. Wilson's reasoning for the war was to "make the world safe for democracy."
  • Russia withdraws from war

    Once Russia withdrew from the war, it turned in on itself and began a bloddy civil war. Russia entered the war ill-prepared. The war created foos shortages and loss of work on the homefront.
  • Communist regime in Russia

    The Bolsheviks established a Communist regime in Russia. The Bolsheviks were a faction of the marxist Russian Social Democratic Labour Party which split apart from the Menshevik faction. The Bolsheviks came to power in Russia during the October Revolution phase of the Russian Revolution of 1917.
  • Sedition Act

    Congress passes the Sedition Act, which was an Act of the United States Congress that extended the Espionage Act of 1917 to cover a broader range of offenses, notably speech and the expression of opinion that cast the government or the war effort in a negative light or interfered with the sale of government bonds. It forbade speaking ill of the government.
  • End of WWI

    The First World War ended. Germany had formally surrendered on November 11, 1918. All nations had agreed to stop fighting while the terms of peace were negotiated.
  • League of Nations

    Propesed by President Wilson. It was an intergovernmental organisation founded on 10 January 1920 as a result of the Paris Peace Conference that ended the First World War. It was not put into play until the war was over.
