In the election of 1916, Woodrow Wilson was elected to be the democratic candidate and Charles Evans Hughes was elected to be the republican candidate. Woodrow Wilson won the election by 23 electoral votes. -
Zimmermann Note
The German Foreign Secretary, Arthur Zimmerman, sent a telegram to Mexico proposing a potential alliance to help gain Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Shortly after, the British intercepted the message and alerted the United States. -
U.S Declares War
After much tension on the United States and its neutrality, Congress declares war on Germany. A military draft is then set up, which brings about 2.8 million soldiers to serve in the war. -
Bolsheviks Led by Lenin Overthrow Russian Government
Led by Vladimir Lenin, the Bolsheviks overthrew the Russian government. This revolt caused Czar Nicholas II to step down from the throne. -
War Ends
After four long years of intense fighting, Germany gives in and signs an armistice with the United States. There were a total of 41 million casualties after the war ended. -
Treaty of Versailles
This was an especially important treaty because it officially ended the war between Germany and the Allied powers. Germany was required to pay for war reparations as well as not being able to build their army.
