  • The battle of Somme

    The battle of the Somme was something Boyd was known for. He took out many german machine gun nets. Rescuing people even thought he could almost be killed by people. During the battle, He jumped into the enemy's field to rescue fellow soldiers.
  • William Boyd

    The War had started, and the US had just entered World War I on April 6, 1917. Boyd applied on July 15, 1917, to enlist in the navy. Since he has a registered degree in pharmacy being most used to his country in the hospital in the navy. He was put through some very tough things to get into the Navy and gave hope up almost because they didn’t accept him cause of his vision issues.
  • Camp Meade Maryland

    William Boyd gave up hope about the Navy and went out to Jenkintown where some Artillery Regiment had been encamped. Boyd has the honor of interviewing with a Major of the Medical Corps. He had given good advice to Boyd saying he would make him a sergeant. William refused but later on, heard he would be transported to Camp Meade Maryland.
  • The crash

    On July 14, 1918, at about 1 am there were loud blasts of the army's boats whistles. There was a big crash maybe it was a torpedo that knocked many people they were in danger. The boat crashed into another and the boat stopped about 60 men and half were saved the boat got all of the survivors on board. Though the boat went away it was still in danger and after hitting a small boat it was in bad condition and still went through.
  • France

    William Boyd had passed by many towns in France on their way. On their ship with the Army making their way to Brest, France on July 18, and marched to the rest camp. They boarded a train on the way and it was a 2 day march hiked at night and slept in the woods on the 5th day at night. Made it there ran into gas was unable to walk with a mask on.
  • The wounded men

    William Boyd and three other crewmen from the army had gone to the Death Valley for some badly wounded men. They carried them back and took care of the wounds and a machine gun shot at Boyd's arm and bulleted in the right arm. Major Shackelford was the one person William Boyd trusted that help remove the bullet and was sent to the hospital and was there for five days.
  • Ship abroad

    Boyd talks about what he experienced during the war. All of France and the soldiers he made friends with all the years of the war. How he experienced the war and what he had learned for his crewmen during his service overseas. He said his family sent mail and learned his oldest sister had passed.
  • Army

    He also talked about how he was a pharmacist first before the war. It all started when and tried the Navy it wasn’t good for him cause of his vision problems. Then giving the army a try thinking it would be a better shot of trying out. The army taught him a lot of things he said he will never forget about it.
  • War

    William Boyd has talked about seven years of his life that were so meaningful to him during the war. He looks back and the fun memories and big events. Making accomplishments during the war, his family sent mail.
  • William Boyd's death

    William Merton Boyd died on December 21 1968 at the age of 75. He was buried in Quarryville, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA. There were many big accomplishments he made throughout his life in the army and out of the army. He was a good sergeant in the army.
