Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia. Germany declares war on Russia August 1st. Then on August 3rd, Germany declares war on France. -
Tensions Rise
The United Kingdom declares war on Germany, after Germany invades Belgium. Austria-Hungary declares war on Russia and Serbia declares war on Germany on August 6th. -
U.S. stands neutral
U.S. President Woodrow Wilson announces the U.S. will remain neutral. He knew that the last thing the U.S. needed was to make allies and become a target. -
The First Battle
The Battle of Tannenberg begins. This was the first battle of WWI. -
A Truce is Announced
The unofficial Christmas truce is declared. This didn't last for long at all, though. -
War Zone
Germany declares a "war zone" around Great Britain, this effected a submarine blockade where even neutral merchant vessels were potential targets. This attacked many shipped and ruined a lot of supplies. -
Second Battle
The Second Battle of Ypres begins. It is during this battle that the Germans first used poison gas. -
Verdun
The Battle of Verdun begins. The Battle of Verdun was the longest battle of World War I and was one of the bloodiest. This battle occured when a German general said he wanted to "Bleed France White". -
The Zimmerman
Germany sends the secret Zimmerman Telegram to Mexico in an effort to get Mexico to join them. The British intercept and decode the telegraph. -
U.S. Joins
The United States declares war on Germany. This occurs after Britain catches the Zimmerman and alerts the U.S. of the telegraph. -
New Government
The armistice agreed upon between the new Russian government and the Central Powers goes into effect. The Central Powers connected Germany and Austria as an association. -
Spring Offensive
Germany launches the Spring Offensive. This was an attempt to end the War where Germany fired one million artillery shells at Britains line. This was a successful attack, but didnt fully end WWI. -
Fighting Ends
Germany signs the armistice at Compiegne, France. Fighting ends on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (11 a.m. on November 11). -
A Treaty
The Treaty of Versailles officially ends WWI. This was a settlement between Germany and the Allied Powers.
