    Battle of the Atlantic

    The Battle of the Atlantic started because German U-Boats were sinking unprotested U.S. and other Allie ships. So in order to protect the ships they started using convoys. They also used sonar to locate German U-Boats in order to destroy them.
  • Pearl Harbor

    Pearl Harbor was an attack on the U.S. made by Japan. It took place on December 7, 1941. 2,400 U.S. military and civilians died during this attack. Japan thought this was a stunning victory.

    Battle of the Coral Sea

    Prior to this battle the Japanese were winning every battle. The U.S. and Australia stopped the Japanese invasion. Japan won the actual battle but the Allies stopped the invasion.

    Battle of Midway

    This battle took place on an island called Midway June 4-7, 1942. The Japanese lost 4 carriers, a heavy cruiser, 3 destroyers, around 275 planes and at least 4,800 men. The U.S. lost 1 carrier, a destroyer, around 150 planes and 307 men.

    Battle of Stalingrad

    Hitler planned to capture the Soviet oil fields, he almost suceeded. They had control of 9/10 of the city but, then the winter of 1943 came and the Germans were forced to stay still. This was the turning point in WWII.
  • D-Day

    This battle was over a 60 mile stretch of beach. It involved 156,000 troops, 4,000 landing craft, 600 warships and 11,000 planes. This was the largest land-sea-air operation in history.

    France was freed from the Nazi’s control September 1944.

    Battle of the Bulge

    This battle took place from December 16, 1944 – January 25, 1945. This battle was fought in Belgium in an attempt by the German’s to capture Antwerp. The German tanks broke through the American lines, but the American’s won.

    Yalta conference

    The Yalta conference took place February 1945 before WWII was over. This was a meeting in the Soviet Union between Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill. During this meeting they set up the United Nations.

    Iwo Jima

    This was an island in the Pacific that was critical for the U.S. to defeat Japan. 27,000 Japanese soldiers held the island. This battle was won by the U.S. 26,800 Japanese troops died and 6,000 U.S. Marines died during this battle.

    Battle of Okinawa

    This battle took place from April 1- June 22, 1945, the U.S. won this battle. This was a battle over Japan’s last defensive stronghold, Japan used 1,900 kamikaze attacks. 110,000 Japanese troops died and 7,600-12,500 U.S. troops died.
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt

    At the beginning of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 4th term he passed away. Harry S. Truman the Vice-President takes the role as President.
  • The end of Hitler

    April 30 1945 Hitler and Eva Braun commit suicide by poisoning and shooting themselves; their bodies were burned.

    V-E day stands for victory in Europe day. Which was May 8, 1945, the day General Eisenhower accepted the surrender of the third Reich. This was the end of the first part of the war.

    Potsdam

    Potsdam took place from July – August 1945. It was a meeting between Truman and Stalin in Potsdam Germany. They drew up a blueprint to disarm Germany and get rid of the Nazi’s. They divided Germany into four sections and separated the land between France, Britain, the U.S. and the Soviet Union.

    The bomb dropped on Hiroshima was codenamed “Little Boy”. In 43 seconds the city was destroyed this took place on August 6 1945.

    August 15, 1945 is the day Japan offers unconditional surrender.

    Occupation of Japan

    There were similar trials to the ones in Nuremburg for Japan’s war crimes. 7 out of 28 leaders were found guilty and were sentenced to death. The U.S. occupied Japan for 6 years, during this time they introduced a free market economy.

    V-J Day is September 2, 1945 and it stands for Victory in Japan Day, This is the day Japan formally surrendered.

    Nuremberg trials

    Was an international tribunal that tried Nazi officials. 12 of the 22 defendants were sentenced to death. Over 23 nations tried Nazi war criminals in Nuremberg, Germany.
