Communism (when Stalin took control)
Joseph Stalin made industrial and agricultural an important part of the Soviet Union. By 1939, Stalin had established Russia as a totalitarian state. Dictatorship until rule by working class acheived. State ownership of property. Russia had a Centrally Planned Economy. -
Treaty of Versailles
The peace Treaty ended World War 1, and created new nations, borders, and war reparations. In 1935, Adolf Hitler began a military build up in violation of the Treaty of Versailles. This treaty caused anger and resentment. The peace settlement had not fullfilled Woodrow Wilsons hope of a world "safe for democracy" -
Facism (when Mussolini took control)
Benito Mussolini created a nationalist group called Fascism. This stressed nationalism and placed the interest of the state of those individuals. To strengthen, fascists argued, and their must be be a single leader and a small group of devoted party members. Mussolini extened Fascist control to the aspect of Italian life. -
Militarism (reference Manchuria)
In 1931, the militarist launched a surprised attack and seized control of the Chinese province Manchuria. Within two months Japanese troops controlled the entire province. Military used to surpress population and expand in new territories. The military service considered greatest way to serve/sacrifice. -
Nazism (when Hitler took control)
Hitler dreamed of all German-speaking people, in a German empire. He wanted to form a "master race", of blonde hair blue eyed Aryans. In 1932, the Nazis became known as the strongest political party in Germany. -
Neutrality Acts/Isolation
The first two acts outlawed arms sales, the third act extened ban on arms and loan sales engaged to Civil Wars. When Japan placed a surprised attack on China in 1937, President Roosevelt found a way around the Neutrality Acts. He then placed a peace of isolation against aggressor nations in order to stop the spread of the war. -
Anschluess (Union with Austria)/Sudentenland
Hitler met secretly with his military group and planned to absorb Austria and Czechoslovakia in the Third Reich. On March 2, 1938 Hitler and his troops went to Austria unopposed. The next day, Germany anounced that its union with Austria was complete. HItler then went to Czechoslovakia and charged that the Czechs were abusing the Sudeten Germans. -
Munich Pact/Appeasement
Hitler claimed that Sudetenland would be his last territorial demand. In September 1938, Adolf Hitler signed the Munich Agreement, which the Sudetenland over to Germany without there being a single shot fired. -
Non-Aggression Pact
Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin signed a Non-Aggression Pact, saying that Germany and Russia was committed to never attack eachother again. Germany and the Soviet Union also signed a second pact, agreeing to divide Poland between them. -
Invastion of Poland
The German Air Force rolled over to Poland and dropped bombs on military bases, airfields, railroads, and cities. Also, German tanks raced across Polands countryside and spread terror. On September 3, after the terror in Poland, Britain and France declared war on Germany. The Soviet Union attacked Poland on the east side, and Germany annexed Poland on the west side conatining 2/3 of its population and by the end of the month, Poland didn't exsist, and WWII had begun.
