    Hitler and the Nazi's were headed to Moscow, but Hitler had his eye on Stalingrad, because it had Stalin's name in it and also it served as an industrial city that supplied the army with their artillery and goods. They attacked the city and were fighting street to street, building to building, room to room, until they eventually pushed the Soviets 100yds from the Volga River. Winter set in and Stalin sent his troops into the city and encircled Germans, blocking off their food, starving them.
