And due to the soldiers taking a longer sea voyage they avoided some of the heaviest coastal defenses. -

The Kamikaze were bombers that had just gone against Americans for the first time. The first force was made up of 24 volunteer pilots from japans 201st navy air group. They made suicidal crashes into enemy targets and it was usually their ships. The plans would be loaded with bombs and extra gasoline tanks before being flown to purposely crash into their targets.
