Dunkirk
The battle of Dunkirk is kicked off with the British Amry getting trapped on the beach off of the Coastal French Town. Hitler decided to use his superior Air Force to destroy the British Army. He called off the Army and let the Luftwaffe take over. The British were able to escape and the failure of Hitler being able to destroy the British Army led to him being unable to take Britain. -
Operation Barbarossa
Hitler opens up a two-front war against Russia and the Allies. Because he did not wait until the west was destroyed he opened up a second front. At that point, no Nation has never won a two-front war at that point. -
Pearl Harbor
The brazen surprise attack carried out by the Japanese on the Pacific Fleet of the US Navy. The goal was to cripple the US into taking them out of the war altogether. They missed the Aircraft Carriers because they were out to sea. Instead of destroying the US chance to come into the war. It brought the US into the war boosting the allied effort in the Atlantic and the Pacific. -
Battle of Midway
This was an important Battle for the United States and the Allies. This battle completely stopped Japan's forward movement and also cripple Japans naval prowess by taking out a majority of the Air Craft Carriers. -
Battle of Kursk
This was the last major offensive of the Germans on the Eastern Front. Hitler trying to copy The Soviet's success at Stalingrad prepared a major offensive. Even though he was greatly outnumbered he thought the greater will would win. The Soviets though had planned the perfect defense for Hitler's tanks and drove back the Germans. After that, it was a constant retreat for Germany. -
Operation Overlord
Also known as D-Day this began the process of freeing France. This would end Germany's almost complete control of mainland Europe and put Germany on the defensive for the rest of the war -
Battle of Leyte Gulf
The US using its naval and air superiority launched an attack with the goal of retaking the Philippines. If the US took the Philipines back this would prove a logistical nightmare for Japan. This Battle also supported the rising pessimism in the Japanese fleet instead of aiming for victory the commanders were now more concerned with honorable defeat. -
First Atom Bomb
This is when the bomb dropped over Hiroshima. This is important not because it ended the war (it did not), but because it unveiled a horrible new weapon that could destroy whole cities with one blow. This bomb-dropping also helped prevent an American invasion saving thousands of American Lives.
