Pearl Harbor
On this day at 7:53 a.m., Japan attacked the U.S. naval base in Hawaii. All of the United States naval base battleship were destroyed. Japan wanted to demoralize the U.S. and cripple the U.S. Pacific fleet. Japan thought that attacking Pearl Harbor would keep the U.S. from joining the war in reality this is what caused the United States to join the War.

The Philippines
Japan military forces landed in the Phillippines. They wanted to control the Southwestern portion of the Pacific and protect Southeast Asia. They also saw taking over the Phillippines as a way to expand wartime. Japan occupied the Phillippines from 1942 to 1945. They wanted to clear out U.S. forces in the Phillippines.

Japanese Internment Camps
After the attack on Pearl Harbor the United States feared the Japanese. Order 9066 forced all Japanese American to leave their homes and were placed in camps to live in for the remaining time of the war. 112,000 Japanese Americans moved to the camps. They lived in terrible conditions and had no rights.

Battle of Midway
The Battle of Midway was a major turning point of World War 2 for the Allies.The US declared war on Japan after the attack on Pearl Harbor. US forces destroyed Japan's Pacific fleet and sunk 4 of their aircraft carriers, weakening their naval strength. This kept Japan from advancing in the Pacific.

Meeting at Yalta
The terms under which the Soviet Union would join the war against Japan were discussed by Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin at Yalta. All three men agreed that the Soviets would receive a sphere of influence in Manchuria after Japan surrendered in exchange for their potentially important participation in the Pacific theater.

Hiroshima
Over the Japanese city of Hiroshima, an American bomber unleashed the first atomic bomb ever detonated in history. An estimated 80,000 people were killed instantly by the explosion. An estimated 40,000 people were killed when another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. In a radio speech Emperor Hirohito declared that Japan would surrender.
