World War 2 Chronological Events

  • Germany invades Poland

    Germany invades a guaranteed Poland with confidence due to the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. This is important because it ignites the powder keg, thus starting world war 2.
  • France and the UK declares war of Germany

    This was important because this is what made the war global and also got many major powers involved. The allies also declared war because they were guaranteeing the Polish.
  • Operation Barbarossa

    This was carried out when the Germans broke the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and declared war on the Soviet Union. It is important because it serves as a major factor to the axis demise.
  • Attack of Pearl Harbor

    This attack was done by complete surprise, destroying many key points in the port, along with ships such as the USS Arizona. This also marked the war between the Japanese and the United States.
  • Battle of Stalingrad

    The turning point of the battles between the Russians and the Germans after the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was Broken. This flipped the tables in the war, along with halting the swift advance of the German forces in Russia.
  • Battle of Midway

    The last major conflict in the sea between the Japanese and the Americans, this battle concluded in favor of the Americans, absolutely devastating the Japanese navy and ending their future Pacific expansions. The Japanese lost 4 aircraft carriers, including their flag ship.
  • Allied Invasion if Sicily

    It was a successful landing by the allies, this gave a foothold of Italy and also marked the inevitable demise of the Italians.
  • Battle of the Bulge

    Hitler's final attempt to prevent the Allies' advance. While succeeding in delaying the advance by weeks, the German military was heavily weakened, giving way to an inevitable defeat. This was important because it resulted in a significantly weaker German military, thus guaranteeing the fall of Germany.
  • Germany Surrenders

    A few days after the battle of Berlin concluded in the defeat of the Germans, the Germans had no choice but to surrender, with the east being occupied by the Soviets and the west is occupied by the French, British and the Americans.
  • US Bombing of Nagasaki/ Japanese surrender

    The second and last atomic bomb to be dropped onto the Japanese. This also marked the end of the war in the Pacific front.
