    The Battle of the AtlanticGermany used submarines to sink supply ships coming to Britain from other countries. Canada set up convoys supply that were protected by corvettes. This is the beginning of the war.

    25% of the pilots in the Royal Air Force (RAF) that defeated the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) were Canadians. British PM Churchill said “Never” was so much owed by so many to so few” 3000 Nazi planes were shot down, so Germany could not invade Britain.

    Battle of Hong Kong
    The attack was in violation of international law as Japan had not declared war against the British Empire. The Japanese attack was met with stiff resistance from the Hong Kong garrison, composed of local troops as well as British, Canadian and Indian units. Within a week the defenders abandoned the mainland and less than two weeks later, with their position on the island untenable, the colony surrendered.Japanese prison camps.

    Royal Canadian Force (RCAF) was small in 1939, but by 1945 4th largest in the world. Canadians bombed German cities at night trying to destroy factories that made war supplies. Not very successful as many pilots died and factories were not totally destroyed.

    Objectives included seizing and holding a major port for a short period, both to prove that it was possible and to gather intelligence. Upon retreat, the Allies also wanted to destroy coastal defences, port structures and all strategic buildings. The raid had the added objectives of boosting morale and demonstrating the firm commitment of the United Kingdom to open a western front in Europe.

    Battle of OrtonaOperation Husky was the beginning of the attack on Italy. Canadian soldiers were the first to take the island of Sicily. It caused lots of Canadian soldiers died or wounded. Ortona was key city on the way to capturing Rome. Defended by the ebst German soldiers. Canada used “mouse-holing” technique to capture the city. Blasted holes in walls of buildings to avoid being shot by Germans.

    LIberation D-DayDay of Deliverance - Canada’s largest military operation of WW2. There are 14,000 soldiers landed on the beach and 10,000 sailors on 100 ships off the coast. Canada was most successful at Juno Beach, but had 335 dead and 739 wounded.

    LIberation of the NetherlandsCanada freed the Netherlands from the Nazis. Canada had 7600 dead/wounded in the battle. Canada gave food to the Dutch people who were so happy they threw flowers (tulips) at the Canadian soldiers. Germany surrendered on May 7, 1945 (Victory in Europe Day)
