Holocaust
The Holocaust basically was a time when the nazis and Hilter used concentration camps to kill 6 million jews and other races. They did this using hangings, ovens, etc. Ended in 1945.

Bell Aircraft
They started a facility in Marietta which increased the population of Mariettta. Then became one of the major manufacturing facilities for the B-29. B-29's were the most formidable bombing aircraft in WW2.

Carl vinson
Carl Vinson was the longest serving congressman in GA. During WW2 about 20 months before Pearl Harbor, he passed two bills increasing plane and ship production. This helped the USA get back up on its feet after Pearl Harbor.

Begininning of World War 2
Adolf Hitler and his nazi party came to power in Germany and they allied themselves with Italy and Japan believing in world domination. When Adolf Hitler invaded Poland in 1939, this event caused France and Britain to declare war on Germany. -
Brunswick Shipyard
The Brunswick Shipyard is 70 miles south of Savannah. It was 1 of the 16 ports picked by the US government to produce Liberty Ships. Liberty Ships shipped weapons and goods over too .

Lend-lease program
The plan was intended to help Britain beat back Hitler’s advance while keeping America only indirectly involved in World War II. The lend-lease program provided for military aid to any country whose defense was vital to the security of the United States.Roosevelt’s program enabled the U.S. military to prepare for the growing threat of Japan on its Pacific flank while helping Britain to contain Hitler across the Atlantic, as it permitted aid to Europe. Basically, weapons given to England. -
Richard Russel
He served as a senator for GA from 1933 to 1971. He supported FDR and his new deal programs. Russel made a committee of 5 during the war to go around the world and report on what is going on. He believed that the USA should be the world policeman and should set up strategic bases around the world to increase stability in the world.

Pearl Harbor
Pearl Harbor Naval Base in Hawaii was bombed and torpedoed by the Japanese Military. That day, FDR gave a speech to congress explaining the event and formally asking congress if they could start a war with Japan. Congress passed this, and on this day this was the day the US entered the war.

Savannah Shipyard
One out of the sixteen shipyards that were picked to build liberty ships.
Liberty ships are ships that ship cargo over to the allied powers such as Britain and France. The company that built them was Southeast Shipbuilding Corportation.

D-Day
On this day, 160000 allied troops invaded on the beaches of Normandy France. This battle gave them a foothold in Europe. This also started their long march across Europe.

Yalta Conference
The Yalta Conference was the 2nd meeting between Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin, and FDR when the war was winding down. They decided on Germany's unconditional surrender. They also talked about plans for the post-war period.

Hitler's Death
The russians were invading Berlin. So Hitler decided to kill himself using cyanide capsulses with his wife. He also shot himself with a gun for good measure.

This is the day when Nazi Germany surrendered. However, Japan had not surrendered yet.

Bomb dropped on Hiroshima
An atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima to try and force Japan's surrender. It immediatly killed 80000 people and ended up killing more due to radiation. First bomb that was ever dropped.

Bomb dropped on Nagasaki
A nuclear bomb was dropped on Nagasaki 3 days after Hiroshima. This bomb killed an estimated 40000 people. On August 15, the emperor of Japan announced the surrender of Japan because of the bombs.

United nations is formed
The Un is a intergovernmental organization to promote international co-operation. Is a repleacement for the league of nations. Was also made to prevent a WW2 from happening again.
