    This battle was a fight for Bitains survival. The British Liner Athenia was torpedoed by a German U-Boat. A U-Boat was a common weapon used by the Germans. It was an easy way to take their components down without them expecting it. Until, the British learned how to fight back to the German U-Boats. The invention of the sonar detecteed a submarine under water. Britain won this war with many factors. Aeroplanes played a major role.
  • Operation Torch

    Operation Torch
    The North Africa Campaign lasted 3 years. Italy invaded Eygpt in September 1940 and in December British forces counterattacked Italy and captured 130,000 Italians. Hitler wouldn't the Allie forces taking over the Axis forces so several long pushes back and forth across Libya and Eygpt reached a turning point of the Second Batlle of El Alameinin in late 1942. British army broke out and drove Axis forces all the way to Eygpt to Tunsia. Helping the Axis troops surrendor ending operation torch.

    Pearl Harbor
    Hundreds of Japenese fighter planes attacket the American naval base at Pearl Harbor. The barrage lasted just two hours, but the outcome was devestating. The Japanese managed to destroy nearly twenty American naval vessels, eight battleships, and almost two hundred airplanes. 2,000 Americans were killed and another thousand was wounded. The day after the attack President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared war on Japan.

    Before this battle Japan was on the offensive, capturing territory throughout Asia and the Pacific. By their attack, Japan had planned to capture Midway to use as an advance base, and they also wanted to entrap and destroy the U.S. Pacific Flee. But because the U.S had communication itelligence success the Pacific Flee surprised the Japan forces, sinking the Japenese carriers that attacked Pearl Harbor six months before. After Midway the Americans and Allies took offensive in the battle.

    The Battle of Stalingrad
    General Palulus was ordered by Hitler to take Stalingrad. Staligrad was an important targert because it was Russia's centre of communications. Russian Army was led by Marshall Zhukou. He used six armies of one million men to surround Stalingrad. The Germans were unable to break out and had to go threw Russia's harsh winters. Hitler order Palulus to fight until the last bullet but in January Germany had to surrendor.

    D-Day
    160,000 American troops landed along the stretch of the French Coastline to fight Nazi Germany. The Americans arrived on special boats to dock on the beach. These boats were called Higgins boats. They were designed in the 1930's by Higgins Industrys for the use in the marsh in south Louisiana. More than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircrafts supported the D-Day invasion. More than 9,000 soldiers were killed and wounded but more than 100,000 soldiers made it pass and began to march across Europe.

    As the allies attempted to get across the western border of Germany, the Germans tried one last tatic to reverse their fortune. Attacking through the Ardennes Forest in Eastern Belgium hundres of German tanks and several hundred thousand German troops broke through the American line. Although the Germans advanced as much as 50 miles in some ares the Ardennes was short lived. U.S. troops and some British troops counterattacked to eliminate the Bulge.     The United States Armed Forces fought and captured the Island of Iwo Jima from Japan. The American invasion had the goal of capturing the whole island, including its three airfields, to provide a staging area for attacks on Japan's main islands. This battle lasted a month long. Its known for rasing the American Flag on top of Mt. Suribachi.

    It lasted till June 21, 1945. Last and biggest Pacific Island battles of World War II, the Okinawa Campaign involved 287,000 troops of the U.S. Tenth Army against 130,000 Soliders of the Japanese Thirty-second Army.

    The atomic bombing of the cities of Japan was conducted by the U.S. during the final stages of World War II. The war in Europe ended when Nazi Germany surrendered, but the war in the Pacific continued. The U.S. called for a surrender in Japan in the Pstdam Decleration, threatning Japan with destruction. Japan's governement ignored these threats. Six days after yhr bombing of Nagasaki Japan announced its surrender to the Allies.

    Allied forces invaded the Phillippines began with Leyte Island. Expecting an invasion Japanese fleet command ordered its forces at sea. Due to affects of previous engagements and a Japanese fuel situation the fleet was deployed in a scatter. When Japan was ordered in the Phillippine waters these forces had to sail seperately. Heading to the Phillippines the naval command suggested that Admiral Kurita Takeo detach an element of his fleet and enter Leyte Gulf. Leyte Gulf was destroyed.
