Munich Pact
Britain, France, Italy and Germany met to discuss Hitler's aims in Munich. Although it was not allowed according to the Treaty of Versaille to take the Sudentenland, the other countries agreed to an appeasement to allow Hitler to take the Sudentenland. Chamberlain of England went back to London saying that the agreement had "secured Peace in our Time". -
Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact
Germany and the Soviet Union agreed to take no military action against each other for the next 10 years. They worked together to take over Poland and then split the land. This broke Hitler's appeasement and WW2 in Europe started. -
Start of the war in European Theater
Full-scale war in Europe began when Germany used Blitzkrieg tactics and military strength to invade Poland (breaking the Appeasement) , to which both the United Kingdom and France had pledged protection so they declared war on Germany. Despite the quick campaign in the east, Germany didn't do anything else. This period of somewhat peacefulness between the major powers lasted until May 10, 1940, and was known as the Phoney War. -
Miracle at Dunkirk
May 27, 1940 – June 4, 1940
The Miracle at Dunkirk involved the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and other Allied troops from the german-occupied French seaport of Dunkirk to England. Naval vessels and hundreds of civilian boats were used in the evacuation, and about 340 000 allied troops were saved. The Miracle at Dunkirk was one of Hitler's biggest mistakes and eventually helped lead to his defeat. -
Battle of Britain
The Battle of Britain was a struggle between the German Luftwaffe and the British Royal Air force .The battle, which was the first major military campaign in history to be fought entirely in the air, was the result of a German plan to win air superiority over Britain. Britain had a radar system that told them when German raids would be.They got better fighter planes, perservered through bombings and could shoot down the German bombers. They also had a geographical advantage. They won the battle. -
Operation Barbarossa
Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union during World War II, . Even after making an agreement to not invade eachother, Germany invaded Russia in order to create a greater Germany. Although Russians were unprepared for the attack, the Germans were unprepared for the long and cold Soviet winter. Later on, they launched another attack to gain control of Russia's oil fields but again, the winter made them suffer and they surrendered in 1943. -
Start of the war in the Pacific Theater
December 7, 1941 – September 2, 1945
Started after Japan launched an air attack on the American naval base of Pearl Harbour. Soon, they began attacking allied bases in Southeast Asia including th territories of Hong Kong. This lead to the US, Britain and Canada declairing war which lead to manny casualties including horrible conditions as POWs. -
Pearl Harbour
The attack on Pearl Harbour was a surprise military strike by the Japanese Navy against the United States naval base at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii. The attack led to the United States' entry into World War II and also the dropping of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. -
Final Solution
The Final Solution was a German plan established at The Wannsee Conference for the extermination of the Jews during World War II which lead to the death of approximately 6 million Jews. Many were deported to ghettos as a holding area. Many were then shipped to labor camps where they lived under brutally inhuman conditions. Hundreds of thousands were sent directly to the gas chambers in death camps. -
Dieppe Raid
A major raid on the French coast port of Dieppe by the 2nd Canadians Infantry Division. The Allies wanted to test out new equipment and gain infromation. It ended as a disaster with the Germans being prepared to fight and more than 900 Canadians killed, almost 600 wounded and almost 2000 captured. Dieppe was the greatest sacrifice of Canadian lives during the war. The only silver lining was that the Allies now knew what to do and what not to do in order to have a successful battle. -
Battle of Stalingrad
The Germans and Russians fought for the strategic city of Stalingrad on the Volga River. Hitler and the Nazis lost the battle, and had 500 000 casualties.They surrendered in 1943. -
D-day
The day in World War II (June 6) on which Allied forces invaded northern France by means of beach landings in Normandy which then resulted in the Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s control. -
V-E day
VE Day – Victory in Europe celebrates the end of the Second World War on 8 May 1945.
The Allies accepted Germany’s surrender, about a week after Adolf Hitler had committed suicide. Winston Churchill announced VE Day - Victory in Europe. This day marks the end of WW2 in Europe, later on after the Japanese surrendered, the second World War was finished for good. -
Hiroshima
Americans dropped the world’s first deployed atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima, after they had attacked Pearl Harbour. The explosion wiped out 90 percent of the city and immediately killed 80,000 people, thousands more would later die of radiation exposure. This bomb and another one dropped in Nagasaki lead to the complete surrender of Japan which effectively ended the war in the Pacific Theater and ended WW2. -
V-J day
Victory over Japan Day is the day on which Japan surrendered in World War II, in effect ending the war. After atomic bombs were dropped on them by the US, the Japanese surrendered completely, and since Victory in Europe was achieved, World War 2 ended.
