    Great Depression Begins
    many people lost their jobs. kids had to go to work instead of going to school and getting an education. lots of people became homeless, starved, and were suffering.
  • Japan Conquers Manchuria in northern china

  • Hitler Becomes Chancellor of Germany

    he won the election with German racial superiority. Hitler overthrew the constitution and took over.
  • Roosevelt First Elected President

    Roosevelt said he would try to solve the nation's problems. he mainly focused on Relief, Recovery, and reform in america. Roosevelt also created the Social Security act which helped the low income elderly and the disabled people.
  • Nuremberg Laws

    took away the German Jews righrs of citizenship. these laws were made to protect the German Blood and honor.
  • Hitler and Mussolini Form the Rome-Berlin Axis

    hitler was welcomed by the Austrians. once Hitler invaded Austria he instantly said Austria was part of the German Reich. Hitler's laws of Germany were quickly made in Austria.
  • Britain's Appeasement of Germany

    the British prime minister met with Hitler in Munich. agreed that if germany gained control of Sudetenland, he would stop seeking more land.
  • Kristallnacht

    on November 9/10 1938. it was a nationwide pogrom in Germany. it meant "Night of Crystal" but it is mainly known as "Night of Broken Glass"
  • Germany and Soviet Union Have a Nonaggression Pact

  • Germany Invades Poland - Blitzkrieg (start of ww2)

    Germans used the Blitzkrieg (lighting war) method to go deep into Poland and take control. Germans gained control of Poland in less than a month.
  • The Nazis implement the “Final Solution”

    Nazis used the term “Final Solution” to refer to their plan to extinct the Jewish people. After the Nazi party got power in Germany its state-sponsored racism led to anti-Jewish legislation, economic boycotts, and the violence of the Kristallnach. Ghettos were made near September 1939 and after June 1941 police units began huge killing operations to kill entire Jewish communities.

    because of racial discrimination African American men weren't allowed to learn how to fly planes. but in 1941 they were put on the 99th fighter squadron. they finished more than 1,500 missions and never lost a plane to the enemies.
  • Germany Invades the Soviet Union

    Pearl Harbor
    Japan surprise attacked a naval base at pearl harbor, Hawaii. the next day the US declared war on Japan and thats how America became involved in ww2. about 2,400 americans died.
  • Japanese American Incarceration

    The order allowed for the removal of Japanese and Japanese Americans from the Pacific Coast. They were forced to sell their homes, possessions, leave their jobs, and move to camps where they were treated like they were in jail.
  • Bataan Death March

    more than 70,000 Filipino and American troops surrendered to the Japanese on the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines. The Japanese marched the soldiers over 65 miles to a prison camp. While they were marching about 10,000 prisoners died from shootings, beatings, or starvation and this was known to be the Bataan Death March.
  • British forces stop the German advance at El Alamein

    General Erwin Rommel was a skilled and had a nickname of “The Desert Fox”. Rommel’s tanks pushed British lines to the Egyptian town of El Alamein, but the British stopped Rommel’s advance at El Alamein and then forced the Germans to retreat.
  • Battle of Midway

    on June 4-7 of 1942 the Allies began to turn the tide against the Japanese. The conflicting navies clashed again off the island of Midway in central Pacific. The U.S. Navy damaged 4 Japanese carriers and at least 250 planes. America only lost one carrier and about 150 planes. The Battle of Midway was a turning point in the war.
  • Guadalcanal

    Allies gained their first major land victory against the Japanese on the island of Guadalcanal. U.S. Marines paraded on the shore in August 7, 1942. In February 1943 Americans finally won the battle. The victory included a group of Navajo Indians. U.S. military used the Navajo language to communicate important messages and employed over 400 Navajos to be Code Talkers.
  • Manhattan Project

    it was a secret effort to build the world's first nuclear weapon. the project cost about 20 billion dollars. the Atomic Bomb took about 3 years to build.
  • German Forces Surrender at Stalingrad

    instead of the Germans Advancing against the Soviets, the Soviets started advancing against the Germans. the surrender ended one of the bloodiest battles in the history of war.
  • Rosie the Riveter

    Rosie the Riveter
    women worked in shipyards, ammunition factories, and offices while the men were off at war. Rosie the Riveter was a picture of a woman working hard. she influenced women to think they had a patriotic duty.
  • D-Day

    the battle was fought on the beaches of Normandy, France. there were 160,000 allied troops adn 9,000 allies died or were wounded. the allies were fighting agaisnt the German Nazi's
  • Battle of the Bulge

    Battle of the Bulge
    Final German assault in December 16, 1944. German troops pushed back Allied forces in the Ardennes region of Belgium and Luxembourg before U.S. forces regrouped and defeated them. The battle was over by January 25, 1945. The battle’s human toll was costly. 120,000 German casualties and about 80,000 Americans casualties.
  • Yalta Conference

    3 allied leaders met with each other. they agreed on restoration of the nations that were destroyed by Germany. they decided to divide Germany into three parts and each ally would be in control of that part. ended on Feb 11, 1945.
  • Iwo Jima

    Iwo Jima-In 19, February 1945, US Marines invaded Iwo Jima, and after lots of fighting it was finally conquered on March 16. The capture of Iwo Jima provided an emergency landing strip for broken B-29s returning from bombing runs
  • Okinawa

    on April 1, 1945 they invaded Okinawa and the battle ended on June 22, 1945. Americans planned to use this island for base for air operations. This battle is usually referred to as the ‘typhoon of steel” the nicknames refer to the ferocity of fighting and the intensity of kamikaze(suicide planes).
  • Roosevelt dies, Truman becomes president

    just after months of being sworn in for fourth term, Roosevelt died. Harry S. Truman, his vice-president, succeeded him and continued the war effort.
  • Allied forces advance on Berlin, Germany surrenders

    The Russians reached berlin. Adolf Hitler had sensed that the end was near. On April 30, he committed suicide. On May 2, 1945 the Soviet army captured Berlin and five days later the German leaders officially signed an unconditional surrender in France. May 8 is now known as V-E Day.
  • Formation of the United Nations

    • April 25, 1945- 50 nations met in San Francisco to discuss a new peacekeeping organization to replace the weak and ineffective League of Nations.• June 26, 1945- All 50 nations ratified the charter creating a new international peacekeeping body known as the United Nations.• President Roosevelt had urged Americans not to turn their backs on the world again.• Unlike the League of Nations, the United States is a member of the United Nations.
  • Potsdam Conferrence

    Allies held the Postdam conference to plan the end of the war.Decision was made to put Nazi war criminals on trial.
  • Atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima & Nagasaki

    Since the Japanese refused to surrender the first atomic bomb was dropped on August 6, 1945 on the city of Hiroshima and killed more than 75,000 people. Then the Japanese still refused to surrender, on August 9, 1945 the second one was dropped on Nagasaki, and killed another 40,000. On August 14, 1945 Japan surrendered.
  • Japanese officials sign an official letter of surrender on the U.S.S. Missouri, ending World War I1

    Allied leaders met aboard the U.S. battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay. There the Japanese officials signed an official letter of surrender. the war is finally over after a few years of fighting.
  • Nuremberg Trials

    24 defendants, including some of Hitler’s top officials. Herman Goering was the creator and the head of Gestapo (secret police). Charged with crimes against humanity. 19 found guilty, 12 sentenced to death. People are responsible for their actions, even during wartime.
  • Marshall Plan

    on January 1, 1948, Congress approved Secretary of state George Marshall’s plan to help boost European economies. The U.S. gave more than $13 billion to help the nations of Europe get back on their feet.
