Germany invades Poland; France and Great Britain declare war on Germany
Germany uses Hitler's newest military strategy-the blitzkrieg, or lightning war. They used airplanes and tanks that were followed by a massive amount of soldiers to take the enemy by surprise. This strategy was successful in Poland's case. Two days later, France and Great Britain declared war on Germany. -
Japan attacks Pearl Harbor
During the attack on Pearl Harbor, 19 ships got suck or damaged. Over 2,300 Americans were killed. Military leaders had known there could be an attack but they didn't know where or when the attack was going to be. Then, the United States declared war on Japan and Japan's allies. -
Allies use atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Truman told the Japanese to surrender or they would get a "rain of ruin from the air". The Japanese did not respond. On August 6, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Between 70,000 and 80,000 people died. Three days later, another atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. More than 70,000 people were killed. -
Germany surrenders
About a week after Hitler committed suicide, the Germans unconditionally surrendered. Eisenhower accepted the surrender from the German military. On May 9, the surrender was signed in Berlin. -
United Nations formed
United Nations was formed after World War 2 to stop nations from going to war and to have a platform for language. United Nations replaced the League of Nations.
