MaoZedong heads Long March
Jainge Jieshi, leader the Koumintang or the Nationalist party, surronded the comminists mountain stronghold in 1933. Outnumbered, the Communist Party forces then fled. Trying to escape them, they began a 6,000 mile-long journey called the Long March, which lasted between 1934-1935. Then, Mao and a few thousand other Communist survivors settled in caves in nothwestern China. -
Germany invades Poland; France and Great Britain declare war on Germany
German's surprise attact on Poland occured on September 1, 1939. Their tanks went across the Polish border as the German aircraft began bombing Poland. France and Britain then declared war on Poland on September 3,1939. Poland had fallen some time before those nations could help them. Then, after his victory, Hitler annexed Poland. -
Japan attacks Pearl Harbor
On December 7, 1941 Japan attacked American sailors at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. U.S. military leaders knew an attack from Japan would come because of the codes the Japanses use in sending secret messages. They sunk 19 ships and more than 2,300 Americans were killed. Japans's greatest naval strategist, admiral Isoroku Yamamoto also called for an attack on the US fleet in Hawaiii. -
United Nations formed
In June 1945, the US and Soviet Union joined 48 other countries in forming the United Nations. This international organizion was intended to protet the members against agressio which is based in New York. The charter for the new peacekeeping organization established the General Assembly. Its five permanent members were Britain, China, Freance the US, and the Soviet Union. -
Germany surrenders
After Germany's loss in the Battle of the Bulge the war drew to a close. By April 25, 1945 there were about three million allied solldiers, six million soviet soldiers all surrounding Berlin. Five days later, Hitler and his wife Eva Braum commited suiciide. On May 7, 1945 Eisenhower accepted the unconditional surrender of the Third Reich from the German military. On May 9, the surrender was signed by Harry Truman. Then, the US and allies celebrated V,E, day for their Vicotry in Europe. -
Allies use atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
President Truman warned the Japanese and said that if they don't surrender to expect a "rain and ruin from the air." The Japanese didnt' reply so on August 6, 1945 the US dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Around 80,000 people died. Then, on August 9, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. More the 70,00 were killed then. the Japanese finally surrendered on September 2, 1945. With Japanese's surrender, the war was over.
