Phony war "Sitzkreig"
Germans referred to this war as the "sitting war"(Sitzkreig) and Americans referred to it as the phony war because there was no almost no fighting. It gave the government more time to protct Britain from an attack. By spring of 1940, people assumed the waer would never take place until on April 9, 1940 when Nazi forces attacked Denmark and Norway. This was the cause of the Battle of Britain few months later -

Battle of Britain
Hitler declared war against Britain after France surrendered to Germany. To defeat Britain, the battle was fought mainly in the airfeilds. The British had new invention (RDF), the detection to find out secret codes from the Germans. Although Germans outmunbered the Bristish, many of their aircrafts were shot down and a lot of Germans were killed. In result, Britain won the battle. -
Hitler invades the Soviet Union
HItler declared war on the Soviet union to give Germany more space and resources, HItler's invasion started with sending 7.2 million troops to the Soviet Union. Because of the winter weather, the tanks were immobilized and the attack was postponed. Hitler's next objective was to capture Leningrad, join the Flemmish army, and to cut off Moscow's oil. Hitler decided he also had Stalingrad and ordered for all Soviet Jews to be murdered along with communists. -
