What happened- Germany wanted to gain air superiority of Britain but lost the battle and was a big deal for the war.

What happened- Hitler thought it would be an easy victory but was wrong. They were there for 2 winters and the Russians were burning and destroying everything. In Moscow the Germans faced heavy resistance and lost alot of men. Finally the Russians won but had devastation.
Why- The general goals were to gain more land for Germany, control the oil fields of Azerbaijan, and exterminate Bolshevism—the radical Communism that Vladimir Lenin had installed in Russia during the Russian Revolution. -

What happened- The Battle of Stalingrad was one of the largest and deadliest battles in World War II. It was a turning point in the war. After losing the battle, the German army lost so many soldiers and took such a defeat that they never quite recovered.
Why- It was the communication center for the Soviets and the Nazis attacked it.
Outcome- The Nazis surrendered because the Russians fought fierce in the city. -

What happened- The Allies invaded North Africa and fought the Vichy French forces until they surrendered. Then the Germans sent troops and they got pinned down.
Why- It would provide the Allies with a jumping off point into Italy.
Outcome- The Allies got the Vichy French to surrender until the Germans sent more troops in to help out. -
Operation Gomorrah
What happened-Operation Gomorrah was the military codename for a series of air raids conducted by the Royal Air Force on the city of Hamburg beginning in the end of July 1943. It was at the time the heaviest assault in the history of aerial warfare and was later called the Hiroshima of Germany by British officials.
Why- They wanted the upper hand on Germany and they are at war with them.
Outcome- Operation Gomorrah caused at least 50,000 deaths and left over a million German civilians homeless. -

What happened- The Battle of the Bulge was a major battle in Europe during World War II. It was Germany's final attempt to drive the Allies off of mainland Europe. Most of the troops involved on the Allied side were American troops. It is considered one of the greatest battles ever fought by the United States military.
Why- It was Germany’s final attempt to get the Allies out of Europe. So it had to be a victory for the Allies.

Liberation of Concentration Camps
What happened- As Allied troops moved across Europe in a series of offensives against Nazi Germany, they began to encounter tens of thousands of concentration camp prisoners. Many of these prisoners had survived forced marches into the interior of Germany from camps in occupied Poland. These prisoners were suffering from starvation and disease.
Why- They came across the camps and saw what had happened and helped out the survivors.
Outcome- The people in the camps finally got saved. -
VE Day
What happened- Western Allies crossed the Rhine into western Germany and they surrendered.
Why- Hitler died and the western forces advanced in to end the war.
Outcome- May 8 marks the formal celebration of the Allies' victory in Europe during World War II.
