The War Begins
World War 2 begins on September 1st, 1939. On this day, Germany invades Poland with hopes of taking over control of the country. Little did they know that this would spark a war never seen before by the world. Germany would unknowingly slander their own name by standing behind thier supposed leader. This would be their greatest mistake. -
Pearl Harbor
Japan officially declares war on the United States and Britain when they decide to devise a suprise attack that occured on the American Naval Base in Hawaii. The US had no knowledge beforehand of this attack and, therefore, was not prepared at all. 2,386 Americans died in this savage attack led by Japan. -
Battle of Midway
The Battle of Midway took place on this day. It was a turning point in the Pacific War. America won this battle and was able to sink 4 Japanese carriers. Japan was never fully able to recover after this battle. This was because Japan expected to win the battle easily. -
Teheran Conference
The Teheran conference was held from the 28th of November to the 1st of December. The conference, codenamed Eureka, was a strategy meeting. It was held between Joseph Stalin, FDR, and Winston Churchill. This group of men was often refered to as "the Big Three" This was because they were the 3 leaders of the most powerful countries in the world at the time. -
D-Day
D-Day occured on this day and America invaded Normandy. This operation was codenamed Neptune/Overlord. It would not have been successful if the US had not mislead Hitler into believing the invasion was going to take place to the north at Pas-De-Calais instead of where the landings actually occured. Eisenhower was the general of the war at this time. This invasion was known as the largest amphibious invasion in the world. -
Yalta Conference
At this conference the "Big Three" met again. It was held from the 4th to the 11th. This conference was the second of 3 wartime conferences between the big 3 in this time of great agnst. In this conference, they discused the re-establishment of war torn countries in Europe. The Postdamn Conference was the last conference of these 3. -
Roosevelt's Death
President Roosevelt dies on this date and Harry Truman becomes the new president of the United States. He suffered a massive cerebral hemorrhage that ended his life in minutes. Americans were truly morning his death. He was the longest serving president in the United States. He had led the nation through World War 2 as well as the great depression and now he had died. -
VE Day
VE Day stands for victory day in Europe. Germany surrenders to the Red Army in Berlin. This marks the start of the end of the war. The war had gone on for 6 years. Hitler was finally out of power and the world was a better place. -
Hiroshima
The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the first and last times any country has used nuclear power as a weapon. The Americans used a nuke known as "little boy" to destroy Hiroshima. Pilots did not know what kind of bomb they were dropping until they looked out the window after delivery. There they saw the large mushroom cloud along with the remains of Hiroshima. -
Nagasaki
Nagasaki was destroyed after a B29 bomber dropped "fat man", a nuclear bomb, on the city. The bomb itself killed 73,000 people within 5 seconds of it exploding. It injured a similar amount of people. It exploded about 1000 feet above the city and destroyed most of the buildings immediately. -
WW2 Ends
The United States and all the Allies come out as the victors of World War 2. Although, with the massive loss of life, in some eyes there truly was no winner. Many people had fought for a cause they believed in and for the Allies, it had paid off.
