    Germany attacks Poland! War declared!
    On the 1st of September, 1939, Germany attacked Poland and German troops crossed the Polish border. This action resulted in Britain and France declaring war on Germany on the 3rd of September because Britain had pledged to protect Poland and honoured that pledge. France became involved as it had also pledged to protect Poland in April of 1939. Several hours later Australia also declared war on Germany as part of the Commonwealth. World War II had begun.

    • May 15, 1940 – Holland surrendered to the Nazis. Countries were quickly falling to Germany, so Canada was told to go to war. After Canada became one of Britain’s strongest allies when France started to crumble. The war shows that Germany would stop at nothing to get what they wanted.
    Canada supported the USA by sending men and supplies.

    The British and Commonwealth allies invaded Tobruk on the 22nd of January 1941.
    There were 49 Australian lives lost and approximately 27 000 Italians captured. The German troops arrived in Tobruk to reinforce their Italian allies which started a big fight with the British and Commonwealth troops.
    It lasted over 200 days, it was the longest siege in British Empire history.

    On February 2nd 1943 German forces surrender to the Soviets at Stalingrad. Casualties- it was estimated that the Axis suffered from 500,000 to 850,000 casualties (killed, wounded, captured). Of the 91,000 German POWs taken at Stalingrad, 27,000 died within week and only 5-6,000 returned to Germany by 1955. The remainder of the POWs died in Soviet captivity.     On the 30th of April 1945 Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun his wife were found dead in their private study. There are many theories to how Hitler died, such as a gun shot through the mouth while simultaneously biting on a cyanide capsule. Eva was said to have died through cyanide and was found dead on the couch leaning away from Adolf while he was dead shot in the temple.     Victory In Europe Day
    (May 8th European time) 7th May (Commonwealth time) is very significant in WWll because it was the end of the war in Europe, which is a quite significant time. It is celebrated not only in Europe but all around the world to remember those who fought, died and a reminder how cruel man can be.
    For the victims and veterans of the Holocaust it is a very special day for them.
    After the German army was shattered Hitler knew they would lose, He committed suicide on the 30th of April 1945.
