The start of World War II
Germany attacked Poland with no warning, creating World War II.
On September 3rd, France and Britain went to war with Germany. A week later, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa entered the war. More than 50 countries were in the war. The World only lasted 25 years before entering another World War. -
Germans invade the Low Countries
Germans invade Belgium, Holland, and Luxembourg because they wanted their land. Belgium, Holland, and Luxembourg were farming countries and dairy. Some electronics manufacturing in Holland. These countries have access to the Atlantic Ocean, and major ports. Germany did not have access to the Atlantic Ocean. -
Germans invade the Soviet Union
Germany's leader, Hitler, violated an agreement he had previously made with Stalin, Russia's leader, to be allies. They had attacked Poland together in the start of the war. By invading the Soviet Union, Germany now had to fight on all sides. -
Japan atomic bombs Pearl Harbor declaring war on the United States
The Japanese launched a sneek attack against the U.S. Navy fleet anchored at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This happened on Sunday morning when many people were still asleep. The Japanese were trying to sink the Navy's aircraft carriers, which were not in Pearl Harbor at the time. -
Battle of Midway
This event is United States Navy's greatest victory. Airplanes from three U.S. aircraft carriers from Pearl Harbor sank four Japanese aircraft carriers off of Midway Island. This was the turning point of the war in the Pacific, as the Japanese withdrew to conquered islands. -
D-Day
The United States, United Kingdom, and Canada land troops ashore in Normandy France. This created a Western Front. The Germans were now fighting countries on all sides of them. -
Battle of the Bulge
German forces launched a attack against the Allies through the Ardennes into Belgium creating a bulge in the Allied lines. Hitler hoped to push the Allies back into France. He hoped to end the war on terms favorable to Germany. -
Germans Surrender
The war in Europe is now over, but the United States is still fighting against the Japanese. The Germans surrendered after being invaded by the U.S, United Kingdom, Canada, and the Soviet Union. Before this, Hitler committed suicide because he did not want to be captured by the Russians. -
U.S. drops atomic bomb on Japan
The United States dropped "Little Boy" on Hiroshima Japan killing 80 thousand people. The U.S. bombing efforts up to this time had not forced the Japanese to surrender. The U.S. did not want to invade the Japanese home islands because we thought we would lose one to two million soldiers. -
Japanese surrender to United States
World War II ended because the Japanese surrendered to the United States aboard the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo Bay, Japan. The Japanese surrendered after the United States dropped atomic bombs on them. They knew they had to surrender, they were afraid that if they didn't we would drop more on them.
