    World War Begins
    The Second World War officially began on September 1, 1939, with the German invasion of Poland. Britain and France declared war on the Nazi Third Reich on September 3, 1939. Seven days later, on September 11, 1939, the Parliament of Canada likewise declared war on Germany, the country's first independent declaration of war and the beginning of Canada's participation in the largest combined national effort in its history.   • Pearl Harbour

    Pearl Harbour
    On the 7th of December 1941 (December 8th in Japan) Japanese warplanes attacked the American fleet as it lay at anchor in Pearl Harbor, the Naval base in Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands. 40 minutes later a second wave of 170 warplanes attacked the harbor. Without a declaration of war from the Japanese, the attacks came as a complete surprise to the American nation although war with Japan was expected to break out at anytime. (Canada)

    Dieppe
    The Dieppe Raid, also known as the Battle of Dieppe, was a Second World War Allied attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe. The raid took place on the northern coast of France on 19 August 1942. The assault began at 5:00 a.m. and by 10:50 a.m. the Allied commanders were forced to call a retreat. The raid was one of the worst in Canadian history.

    The Battle of Stalingrad was a major battle of World War II in which Nazi Germany and its allies fought the Soviet Union for control of the city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd) in southwestern Russia. The raid took place from August 23rd 1942 to Febuary 2nd 1943. It was the largest battle on the Eastern Front.

  • Hitler Commits Suicide

    Hitler Commits Suicide
    Adolf Hitler committed suicide by gunshot on April 30th 1945 in his Führerbunker in Berlin. His wife Eva committed suicide with him by ingesting cyanide. That afternoon, according to Hitler's prior instructions, their remains were carried up the stairs through the bunker's emergency exit, doused in petrol and set on fire in the garden outside the bunker. Soviet archives record that their remains were recovered and interred in locations until 1970 when they were cremated and ashes scattered.
