Germany was honoring their alliance with Austria-Hungary. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia in response to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Serbian nationalists. Russia was allies with Serbia, including Germany, knew Russia would soon declare war on Austria-Hungary. Russia and Germany had both been mobilizing and massing troops near the border preparing for war. Germany just declared war first. -
