Battle of the Somme
The battle of somme was the first offensive for Britain is the war. The kind of warfare was trench warfare along with heavy bombarment from the British. The result was a stalemate with the allies gaining very little ground. The casualties were estimated around 1,000,000 men, with around 23,000 being Australian men. Australia's involvement in the Battle of the Somme was to at first unlock Thiepval and then later on to halt the offensive at Sailly-Laurette. The battle ended on the 18th of November -
