The Archduke of Austria- Hungary was Franz Ferdinand. He was assassinated by a Serbian national group. This assassination caused a chain reaction to begin World War 1. -
The First Battle of Marne
The Germans were trying to defeat France before Russia could send in their troops to attack Germany. Germany had to move quickly, but France then fought back and were able to hold their position so the Germans had to retreat. This was known as the Schlieffen plan and it failed. -
Battle of Verdun
The Battle of Verdun was the longest battle in World War 1. This battle lasted almost a whole year and it left a huge hole in the French and German forces. The Germans lost about 430,000 men and France lost about 550,000 soldiers. -

In World War 1, The Battle of Jutland was the largest naval battle. It was a battle between the British and the Germans. Germany was hoping to weaken the great British navy. The Battle of Jutland had 250 ships and around 100,000 people fight in it. -
Battle of the Somme
This was a battle where the British and French forces were working together to fight against the Germans. This battle was fought to gain control over the River Somme and it did not go according to plan for the British. The first day of the war the British had about 57,000 casualties and it is known as the bloodiest day in British military history. -
The U.S. Enters the War
Germany created a blockade around the UK because they did not want any supplies or anything going through the UK. Germany sank many unarmed ships that just had passengers on them. A ship named the Lusitania was sunk and it had many Americans aboard. This event made the United States extremely mad and it soon led to the U.S. joining the war. -
Battle of Caporetto
This was a battle between Germany and Austria-Hungary vs. Italy. The Germans really wanted to make a serious statement to Italy because Italy left the Central Powers. The Germans attacked during the night and Italy was caught off guard. Italy could not fight against the Germans so they had to retreat and Germany took 265,000 prisoners. -

Russia wanted out of the war because they always had negative outcomes. Russia was always out-modernized by the Germans. The Russian government was also in trouble so the country needed to focus on their government problems. -
Battle of Cantigny
This was not a huge war but it was important. It was the first war that the U.S. fought. This battle was used as a statement that the U.S. was going to be serious and that they wanted to completely destroy the Germans. -
Battle of Amiens
This was the Germans last effort to make a big push against the allies. The allies were just supplied with new American soldiers and they were able to hold off all of the German attacks. The allies then attacked Germany and they easily pushed them back. Germany then realized that they could not win the war and they had to fall back to Germany.
