    Assassination Of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
    The start of World War 1 was due to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on the 28th of June 1914. He was assassinated by a Bosnian Serb, the assassination was helped by the “Black Hands” as they were a secret Serbian nationalist group. Archduke was set up when he was in a car and told the driver he was going the wrong way the driver broke and got close up to the assassin when trying to reverse and he shot both Archduke.

    War Is Declared
    War is Declared July-August 1914. Austria-Hungary angered the Serbians after giving them harsh conditions that the Serbians rejected. Russia then later tried protecting the Serbians and the Germans protecting Austria-Hungary which caused the start of the war between Russia and Germany. Then the French got involved causing the Germans to declare war on them. Lastly, Japan joined in and declared war against the Germans, which started the World War.

    Germany Sinks the RMS Lusitania
    Germany sank the RMS Lusitania on May 7th, 1915. A German U-boat destroyed a British Luxury steam boat killing about 1,195 people 128 of them being Americans. This angered the US as Germany broke the “prize laws” which declared that the boats had to be warned of attacks. Germany was standing on their ground defending themselves saying the boat carried weapons intending warfare. This was one of the many reasons the US decided to join the war.

    The Battle of Somme, this battle was the bloodiest and longest in the war. The war took between July 1st to November 18 1916 which was the British Empire and French Third Republic against the German Republic. There were more than 3 million men who fought in the war in which 1 million of them were either killed or wounded which made it one of the deadliest wars in history. The war ended with the allies being victorious which were the French and the British empire.

    On October 8, 1918, he landed in France and was sent to a camp named Haussimont. His chances of returning home are slim, but he still hopes to return home. He’s feeling well and is ready to work but he had to kick out a slacker from his group. He and his group already had experience with the British and were ready.

    The US entered the war January-June 1917. The Germans started attacking the British with boats but the boats were on the Atlantic which angered the US. The Germans tried allying with Mexico if the US tried interfering with the war between Germany and the British. The US army was deployed to France to interfere in the war to help the allies there were 2 million deployed and 117 thousand of them were killed.

    On September 13, 1918, they left on a Long Island sound boat that arrived at Yaphank Camp. They had constant medical checkups and during those checkups, it was said that there was a new disease among them. Now they were scheduled to go to Long Island and then to Hoboken. As they got there they got assigned bunks and some were afraid the weather would be a little too severe.

    On September 23, everyone got worried as there was an increase of people getting sick, and later noticed it was the Spanish Influenza. Five days later the first death happened and after that, the death rate of the sickness increased gradually. They were still on a boat crossing different places from the Azores. After they had a burial for 15 members that passed away and the Sickness affected Bill as he could not smell and coughed a lot.

    From this point, it looked like he wasn't going to have a chance to go to the front lines and fight since the war looked like it was coming to an end. He wanted to celebrate Thanksgiving by buying his people some turkey since they would always eat beef. Although he felt like he was being useless just being there he heard many people are now getting called back to the United States which now made him anxious to return home too.

    On November 24, 1918, they marched down to the train that took them past Paris to Brest. When he made it to Brest he marched down one of the worst camps has ever been in which was a mud hole and had large corrugated roofing nearby. Then Colonel Clark left them as he had a big impact on the squad that many people had respect for as he left his team at Brest. Then many others started leaving first was the National Army then after all of them went home the regular army would return home.
