First Battle of Marne
The First Battle of Marne started on September 6th, 1914 and ended September 10th, 1914. After Germany attacked France, the French and British launched a counter attack at Marne. This battle had many casualties and marked the end of mobile warfare. This battle also officially marked the start of World War 1. -
Arnold Stephen Hoke
Arnold Stephen Hoke was a World War 1 veteran and was in about 5 battles and survived the war. While he was in battle his team was the last line of defense against the Germans and were surrounded in a farm house that was mined. Many men died from German machine gunners and from being ambushed. -
Arnold Stephen Hoke
Arnold and his unit attacked German trenches on March 9th, 1915. They had one objective and that was to capture German soldiers and get information out of them. 15 soldiers were killed during this mission and 30 more would get injured. Arnold suffered a gun shot to the arm during this mission. -
Gallipoli
The Battle of Gallipoli started April 25th, 1915 and lasted until January 9th, 1916. At dawn of April 25th, 1915 allied troops landed on the Gallipoli peninsula in Ottoman Turkey. Trench warfare quickly took hold hold mirroring the western front, and casualties piled up. -
Battle of Verdun
The ten hour bombardment saw an unprecedented concentration of fire power on the French. Britain and it's empire had to lead the big push in the battle. The French casualties were at about 400,000 and the Germans were at about 350,000 soldiers. -
Jutland
The German High seas fleet hoped to weaken the Royal Navy by launching an ambush. The British lost 14 ships and over 6,000 men during this battle. This battle was on May 31st, 1916 and only lasted just a few hours. Also involved 250 ships and over 100,000 men. -
Battle of Somme
The Battle of Somme was a joint operation between British and French forces and lasted from July 1st to November 18, 1916. They intended to achieve a decisive victory over the Germans on the western front.The attack was planned by Douglas Haig and Henry Rawlinson. In defense the Germans launched 7 divisions to attack the British. -
Arnold Stephen Hoke
Arnold became apart of the famous 42nd rainbow division, this division was apart of the national guard and is widely known around the world. This unit started in 1917, four months after Americas entry into the war. It drew men from 26 states and the district of Columbia.
