    he was in a car when it happened while he was taking a trip. he was there a few days before getting shot by a teenage serbian revolutionary called gavrilo princip and austria-hungary did not take it lightly so then the war began

    it all started on july 28th where austria-hungary declared war on serbia after the assassination of archduke franz ferdinand. And when it started germany, austria-hungary, bulgaria and the ottoman empire (the central powers) started to fight great britain, france, russia, italy, romania, canada, japan, and the u.s( the allied powers)

    (1916) Feb 21st the battle of verdun was among the longest and bloodiest conflicts of ww1 and each side suffered over 300 thousand casualties and there was a total death count of 300 thousand. And many people called this battle the “meat grinder” the germans even took a crucial fort from the french without firing a single shot

    he had a hard time getting in because he was only 16 however, he went to the recruiting station he said he was 18. But he still didn't get in. He went to the marines, navy, and eventually the army enrolling station to get enrolled but he then changed his age to 21 so he could get in, and so he was then put in the army

    for his first few weeks he was at fort logan. He was then transferred to fort riley. And he was able to sleep in tents and their food was made in bulk by heating up GI cans over a fire. Little to no one that he new at the time new he was in the army accept his wife susannah

    his days in france where mostly driving a car and the ambulance down in the gironde district and small streets and when he got to his post he took on all kinds of assignments because unlike all the other soldiers he wasn't assigned to a very specific duty
    exept staying near the ambulance and he didn't have a single casualtie in his unit.

    he was there for a few months he went to lindberg with some prisoners he then went back to koblenz for an assignment he didn't know where the officers and others went so he stayed in a boxcar for a few days he found them loading up a train so he got on with them and had a day of entertainmen

After 2 and a half years in the army and another 2 years on the ocean from the time he was 15 he was treated as an adult when he got back he decided he was going to be independent but he was still only 18 he got out the army and got a job at a business school and took shorthand typewriting
