Germany and France have been fighting over Morroco and almost go to war over it until Great Britain rushes in and backs up France. Then Germany backs down. -
Dreadnought Race
With the completion of a British battleship it sends Germany and Great Britain into a race to have the better navy. This starts and big rivalry. -
The Triple Entete
The main alliance of the Allies before the war begins. This is made up of Great Britain, France, and Russia. -
Bosnian Crisis
Austria-Hungary annexes Bosnia-Herzogovina and causes Serbia to become angry. -
Assassination in Sarajevo
Archduke Franz Ferdinand (heir to throne of Austria-Hungary) and his wife are murdered by Serbian officers. -
Austria-Hungary declares war
Franz Joseph, the emporer of Austria-Hungary, declares war on Serbia for the death of his son. -
Germany declares war on Russia
Germany declares war on Russia because they start mobalizing troops. -
******Training Camp******
Paul and his friends trained for the war. They only learned how to salute and speak to superior officers. Paul says he was not prepared for the front when he gets there. -
Germany declares war on France
Germany declares war and enters Belgium that day. Germany starts on the Schlieffen plan. -
Britain declares war on Germany
Due to Germany attacking Belgium, a nuetral country, Britain steps in to help Belguim and declares war on Germany. -
Austria-Hungary declares war on Russia
Austria-Hungary declares war on Russia. -
Battle of Frontiers ends
Four battles occured in the battle of the frontiers. It was fought between France and Germany, but neither made much of an advance. -
Battle of Tannenberg
Germany defeats Russia in a major battle and is one of the bigger wins for Germany on the Eastern Front. -
Japan enters the war
Japan declares war on Germany and enters on the Entete's side. -
First Battle of the Marne
France halts Germany's advance. -
Battle of Masurian Lakes
Germany loses the battle but takes over 100,000 Russian prisoners. -
Battle of Ypres
Germany was moving through Belgium and British defeat was right around the corner, but French recruits came and pushed Germany back. -
Turkey enters the war
Turkey enters the war as allies to the Central Powers. -
Zeppelin
The first Zeppelin/blimp is used in the war. -
Christmas Truce
All the soldiers on the Western Front declared a Christmas Truce and all the soldiers spent time together and no shots were fired. -
******Kemmerich******
Paul visits his friend Kemmerich who has a leg injury. He is one of his classmates and is the first friend that dies in the book. -
Zeppelin bombing and Dardenelles
Zeppelin airships bombed Yarmouth and the British navy attacked the Turkish forts. -
******Back to the Front******
Paul and his friends have to go back to the front. Paul and the other soldiers have to lay out barbed wire. -
Zeppelins attack London

Second Battle of Ypres
Poison gas is for used for the first time by the Germans on the British. Many British soldiers died. -
Gallipoli Battle
Allies begin a 9 month long attack on the Turkish peninsula of Gallipoli. -
Lusitania Sunk
German U-boats sink the Lusitania, which had American civilians on board. -
Italy enters the war
Italy enters the war on the side of the Allies. Before the war Italy was with Germany and Austria-Hungary, but end up switching sides. -
Tsar Nicholas takes over
Tsar Nicholas takes over command of the Russian armies. -
Gallipoli retreat
The allies start withdrawing their troops from Gallipoli. -
******Trench Battle******
The soldiers in Paul's group get ambushed and have to fight the other soldiers. Hemmerich, Pauls old teacher, hides in a trench and won't budge. Paul realizes that Hemmerich is a coward. -
Battle of Verdun
Germans attacked the French at Verdun. The battle lasted 9 months and there were almost a million casualties total. There is no real winner to the battle. -
Battle of Jutland
Was a German and British ship (navy) battle and Germany retreats. -
Battle of Somme
Lasts five months. 60,000 British soldiers were killed/seriously wounded on the first day. -
******Sent Home******
Paul is given a two week leave to go home and three extra days for the travel time. Paul feels strange going home, not being able to know what happens to his friends and not knowing if he will be able to fit in at home. He get there to find his mother sick. By the end of his vacation he finds he doesn't really want to leave. -
First Tanks
The British soldiers first use tanks in the Battle of Somme, but they aren't very useful because of the environment around them. The tanks often roll over in the mud crushing soldiers. -
New War Commander
Lloyd Geroge persuades the cabinet to appoint the French General Nivelle as Sumpreme War Commander. -
Zimmerman telogram
Britain intercepts the Zimmerman telogram and sends it to the U.S. When deciphered it is Germany sending a message to Mexico. They want Mexicans to attack the U.S and keep the U.S busy. -
******French Soldier Killed******
Paul goes out on a mission into No Man's Land and ends up getting lost on the way back. He hides in a trench while shots are going off all around. A french soldier enters the trench and Paul has to kill the soldier. After killing the soldier, Paul becomes very distressed and disturbed by what he has done and loses it. He thinks about the soldier's family and what he has done. After a while he calms down and finds his way back. -
USA declares war on Germany
The United States of America enter the war on the Allies side and start sending soldiers over to Europe. -
Russian Revolution
Lenin becomes dictator and Tsar Nicholas II abdicates. -
Treaty of Brestlitousk
The Russians sign an armistice with Germany. The terms of the armistice were very harsh. -
******Paul is injured******
Paul and his friend Kropp are wounded in battle and are put on a train to go home. On the way Kropp gets worse and has to get dropped off. Paul fakes a fever so he can go with Kropp, promising Kropp he wouldn't leave him. Paul goes through surgery and recovers while Kropp has to have his leg amputated. -
******Kat dies******
Kat is wounded in the battle and Paul tries to carry him to safety. On the way there a piece of shrapnel hits Kat on the head and Kat dies. This is a terrible blow to Paul because Kat was one of Paul's last friends alive, and now he is dead. -
RAF formed
The Royall flying corps and the Royal Naval Air Service were merged to form the Royal Air Force. -
Battle of Amiens
The British general is ordered to attack the German sector at Amiens. The Allies broke through the German defenses. -
******Paul Dies******
After fighting in the war for four years Paul dies. He is the last of his class mates to die. It happened so fast and was so quiet that the soldiers called it all quiet on the western front. -
Allies recover France and Belgium
The allies take almost all of German occupied France and part of Belgium. -
Armistice with Turkey
The allies had pushed the Turkish and the Turks asked for an armistice. -
Hindenberg line collapsed
By the beginning of November the allies pushed the Germans back beyond the Hinndenberg line. -
Kaiser abdicates
Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicates. -
Armistice signed
At 11 a.m. in the French town of Redonthes the Armistice was signed bringing the war to an end. -
Treaty of Versailles
The Treaty of Versailles was drafted and signed. This was part of the reason for World War II because of the harsh terms taken against Germany.
