The beginning

3300 BCE

It was believed that the first people to dance were the Egyptians. Some archaeologists discovered paintings of dancing figures in rock shelters and caves.

Ballet

1400

Ballet started in Italy around the year 1400,but it didn't really start to become popular until the year 1500. Ballet gianed its popularity when a lady of the arts, Catherine de Medici, married King Henry 11 and threw festivals where they would perform ballet dances.Ballet is a core into every single dance there is.

Masque

1600

Masque started in pageants and shows in the 16th century. Masque dancing involved intricate costuming and stage designing that also incorporated singing and acting as well as dancing.It was often used as court entertainment.

Ballroom dance

1700

Ballroom dancing started through 17th century and 18th century.Ballroom dance was invented by Victor Sylvester.The Viennese waltz is the oldest ballroom dance. It is so called to distinguish it from the waltz and the French waltz, is the oldest of the current ballroom dances. It emerged in the second half of the 18th century from the German dance and the Landler in Austria and was both popular and subject to criticism.

Classical Persian

1795

Classical Persian dance evolved from courtroom dancing. T This era influencing Persian dance was the Qajar Dynasty which lasted from 1795 to 1925. Dancers would perform artistic and lively dances for the Shah. The music is usually played by a small band.

Tap Dance

1800

Tap dancing came from African tribe dances . It's believed that it started in the mid-1800s. Tap makes percussion sounds because of dancers most commonly wearing leather shoes with two pieces of metal that hit against the floor when they dance. Tap is still a very popular now a days.

Merengue

1890

Merengue was a music style that came from the Dominican Republic before it became a dance style. The style came from laborers working in sugar beet fields.It is a Caribbean dance style that involves partners holding each other in a tango like position and moving their hips side to side.

Jazz

1900

Jazz came from Africa and emphasis rhythm and timing. Some older jazz dances include the Charleston,the shimmy, and the Lindy hop. It is a very popular style to this day.

Acro

1900

Acro is short for acrobatics.It is orginated with circuses.It involves doing smooth and flexible movements, and lots of backbends and tricks.This style is a widely popular style still today.

Contemporary Dance

1950

Contemporary dance is a style that is made up of jazz,ballet and modern dance.It's known for the first choreographer was Merce Cunningham .Contemporary can be multiple styles, but mostly it is melancholy and intense. It involves a lot of technique usage. It is a very popular style in competitive dance theses days.

Hip-Hop Dance

1970

Hip-hop dance started to happen in 1970. It started from African tribe dances. But it didn't become popular from how it started. It involves a lot of sharp movements.Some styles of hip-hop involve popping,locking,breaking, and more.

Future Dance

2023

Today's dance style has taken a turn towards more hip hop dances. Because of hip hop has not been around nearly as long as most dance styles, it's still the most popular style to this day. Ballet, jazz, and contemporary are very popular in dance studios, especially competitive dance studios. But now it is mostly from Tiktok dances that we use in everything now when we dance.
