  • Hobbes publishes Leviathan

    Hobbes publishes Leviathan
    The Leviathan is one of the first political theory books to be published. The word Leviathan comes from a sea creature described in the bible. This book was one of the first to ever challenge the government. Knowing the risk, Hobbes published the work anonymously to avoid the consequences of challenging a government.
  • Locke publishes Two Treatises

    The two treatises by Thomas Locke are ideas for a better government. Many major political questions arose from this book. Shortly after the book was published, King James was overthrown. Locke’s ideas were similar to those of Hobbes. Some say Hobbes inspired the writing of the Two Treatises.
  • Montisqueu Publishes The Spirit of Laws

    At the release of the Spirit of Laws, many citizens were motivated to change political structure. Though there was much motivation to change, there were still few ideas of how to change. Montisqueu wanted a constitutional government and to end slavery. His book covered how we are affected by government and what we can do to change it.
  • Rousseau Publishes The Social Contract

    When the Social Contract was published in 1762. The main goal of the Social Contract was to tell about the organization of the government by the rich. When people realized the injustice in the government they were angered. The social contract was the main motivation for the Social Contract.
  • Beccaria Published On Crimes and Punishment

    On Crimes and Punishment was the first writing about capital punishment. It also called to abolish capital punishment. As one of the most advanced books, it started many uprisings. The book said that crimes of any kind should be avoided. This was motivation for law enforcement in new countries like America.
