  • Hobbes publishes Leviathan

    The "Leviathan" was a work that many read and was one of the first of its kind. Many people began to see the importance of civil peace and social unity. The establishment of a commonwealth became a thought that many pondered and attempted to put into action.   • Locke publishes "2 Treatises on Government"

    This work was a response to the poor government tactics of Great Britain. At the time, England was corrupt, shadowed, and full of error. After John Locke wrote this, he fled to Holland to avoid execution for the crime of treason.   • Montesquieu publishes The Spirit of the Laws

    As France began to fade at a very fast rate, Montesquieu attempted to bring light to its citizens why they were experiencing such troubles. The French Revolution was sparked from this work. The French government even kicked him out for writing this. Expulsion for writing treasonous works was common in this era.   • Rousseau publishes the Social Contract, Emile

    The "Social Contract, Emile" was a work that was designated to changing the education systems in France. This work, like Montesquieu's, was immediately banned from being sold. This work has a lot to do with why education reform is taken into the government's hands.   • Beccaria publishes On Crimes and Punishments

    Cesare Beccaria's work "On Crimes and Punishments" is a work based solely on how certain crimes should be punished and which crimes should be prosecuted more harshly than others. This work was banned by the Italian government. Severity of punishments were handled differently after this work came out.
