  • Charles Manson is released from prison

    He begins attracting followers in San Francisco's Haight Ashbury district. Manson and his followers move to Southern California and establish a commune at the Spahn Ranch in the San Fernando Valley.
  • The Beginnings

    On August 8-9, Manson instructs a group of his followers to commit a series of brutal murders in Los Angeles, including the murder of actress Sharon Tate and several of her friends at her home in Benedict Canyon. On August 10, Manson and several of his followers murder Leno and Rosemary LaBianca at their home in Los Feliz.
  • Arrests of the Mansons

    Manson and several of his followers are arrested and charged with the murders. Manson and his co-defendants are convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to death.
  • Change of Scenery

    California abolishes the death penalty, and Manson's death sentence is commuted to life imprisonment. Manson is moved to Corcoran State Prison, where he remains incarcerated for the rest of his life.
  • New Murder Charges

    Manson and several of his followers are convicted of the murder of musician Gary Hinman in 1969.
  • Assassination Attempt

    Manson's follower Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme attempts to assassinate President Gerald Ford in Sacramento, California. She is sentenced to life in prison.
  • Death of Charles Manson

    Charles Manson dies in prison at the age of 83.
