    First Women's Rights Convention
    The first women's rights convention is held in Seneca Falls, New York. There, 68 women and 32 men sign a Declaration of Sentiments. Which modeled on the Declaration of Independence, outlines grievances and sets the agenda for the women's rights movement. From there women would get voting rights and some eqauality.

     Elizabeth Cady Stanton
    Stanton became one of the best-known women’s rights activists in the country. Her speeches addressed such topics as married women’s property rights, temperance, abolition, and presidential campaigns. She opposed the 14th and 15th amendments to the US Constitution, which gave voting rights to black men but did not extend the franchise to women. Their stance led to a rift with other women’s suffragists and prompted Stanton to found the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) in 1869.

    Susan B. Anthony
    Susan B. Anthony was a pioneer crusader for women's suffrage in the United States. She was president of the National Woman Suffrage Association. Her work helped pave the way for the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution, giving women the right to vote.
  • National Association of Colored Women is formed

    National Association of Colored Women is formed
    The National Association of Colored Women is formed with the goal of achieving equality for women of color. The association brings together more than 100 black women clubs. Women of color came together to protest and speak their word over the rights.
  • The Transcontinental tour

    The Transcontinental tour
    Mabel Vernon and Sara Bard Field lead a transcontinental tour which gathers over 500,000 signatures on petitions to Congress in favor of women’s suffrage. This soon further helped them gain the ability to vote.

    Mabel Vernon
    As part of NAWSA's Congressional Committee, Vernon helped to organize the Woman Suffrage Parade held on March 3, 1913, the day before President-elect Woodrow Wilson’s inauguration. She was an early member of the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage, working as a fund-raiser, recruiter and organizer. When the National Woman's Party was formed in 1916, Vernon was named secretary.
  • Alice Paul begins a hunger strike

    Alice Paul begins a hunger strike
    Picketers are arrested on charges of “obstructing traffic,” during a demonstration. Alice Paul and others are convicted and incarcerated at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia. While imprisoned, Alice Paul begins a hunger strike and is forcibly fed a mixture of eggs and milk for nutrition. A peaceful way of protesting.

    In January 1917, Paul and over 1,000 “Silent Sentinels” began eighteen months of picketing the White House, standing at the gates with such signs as, “Mr. President, how long must women wait for liberty?” They endured verbal and physical attacks from spectators, which increased after the US entered World War I. Instead of protecting the women’s right to free speech and peaceful assembly, the police arrested them on the flimsy charge of obstructing traffic.

    The law is passed that any U.S citizen can vote regarding their sex. Women are able to get to vote and get more equal rights opportunities. This is a big step for women.
