This book described that women had societal pressure to be housewives and remain them. Betty Friedan is a main contributor to the movement because she demolished the idea that women are just wives and baby makers, they're people and deserve the same life that men had.

    On June 10, 1963 - The Equal Pay Act is passed by congress. It allows equal pay regarding Race, Gender, or Color of the woman. This was a big milestone in the movement because they were really focused on eliminating pay discrimination.

    The Supreme Court allows married couples to use contraception. This was seen as another big milestone because the group was fighting for it. Contraception and abortion were illegal at the time.

    The National Organization For Women (NOW) is without a doubt one of the first, and largest women's organization. At first the organization was not very successful. It focused on employment, discrimination, maternity absences, equal education, etc.
  • Shirley Chisholm

    Shirley Chisholm
    As one of the founders of "NOW." She was an advocate for African American and Women's Rights. In 1968 she was the first African American Women to be elected into congress. This was a huge milestone for her and the women of America.

    Roe V Wade Decision
    The court found Anti-Abortion laws to be unconstitutional. This was also a huge victory for the movement as abortion and contraceptive were seen as Women's rights. Abortion was now more accessible to women and safer.
  • Pauli Murray

    Pauli Murray
    She helped create NOW. She was a law student at Yale and in 1977 was the first African American woman to be ordained by the Protestant Episcopal Church. She helped fight for the Women's Liberation Movement along with advocating for African American rights.
