Equal Pay Act

- prohibited employees from discriminated against women in regards to wages. Men and women with the same credentials and similar effort and skill exerted must be paid equally.
- gave women more opportunity in the workforce
- prior to this act, women were consistently being paid less than men for the same work.
- Pay between genders is still not equal. -
Civil Rights Act- Title VII

- prohibits businesses from discriminating against any employee based on their gender, race, religon, or nationality
- "sex" was added as a component of the bill at the last minute... before, the bill only prohibited discrimination based on race, religon, and nationalilty
- gave women more opportunity to excel in the workforce that was previously made up of almost exclusively men -

Equal Rights Amendment not approved by states

- 31 states ratified the amendment. 38 states are needed to ratify.
- sexual equality (except for voting) is not protected by the US Constitution.
- Improvements have since been made to protect women's rights -
Roe versus Wade

- The Supreme Court proclaims that the Constitution assures women's right to abolish an early fertilization, which makes abortion legal.
- Allowed womens with a doctor, could pick abortion in prior months of pregnacy without legal regulation
- There were restrictions regarding later months, based off the right of privacy. -
Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act

- Obama's 1st piece of legislation
- overturned Supreme Court's original decision in 2007 in the case of Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Inc. (originally Goodyear won 5-4)
- Lilly Ledbetter accused Goodyear of discriminating against her because of her gender through unmerited poor performance reviews and unfair wages
- Lead to more accusations of companies for sexism and discrimination -

1978 - The Pregnancy Discrimination Act is formed banning employment discrimination against pregnant women.
1981 - Congress passes a resolution making Women’s History Week a National celebration.
