This amendment instituted Prohibition for the United States. Consuming alcohol was illegal until it was repealed in 1933. -
Nineteenth Amendment
The amendment gave women the right to vote and prohibited the denial of suffrage based on sex. Many believe that the movement finally passed because of women's political involvement in Prohibition. -
Emergency Quota Act
This act limited the amount of immigrants that came into the United States. Many newly enfranchised women focused on improving the lives of immigrants that were aleady there, such as the Hull House movement. -

The first Miss America beauty pageant started. It was held in an urbanized city in New Jersey, one of the homes of many immigrants whose friends and families were rejected by the Emergency Quota Act. -

Edith Wharton was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for her acclaimed novel "The Age of Innocence." While some women embraced their newly unleashed sexuality, others expressed themselves through literature. -
First issue of Reader's Digest
Lila and Dewitt Wallace found and publish the first edition. Authors, like Wharton, were not the only people who expressed themselves through writing. -
First woman governor
Nellie Ross of Wyoming was the first woman governor. As more women emerged in social activities and literature, women were held in more political asteem. -
Earhart flies over Atlantic Ocean
Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly over the Atlantic Ocean. She continued the trend of women in prominent positions. -
First Oscar's held
The famous awards ceremony first began. Many women were in attendance, further establishing women's role outside of the home. -
Stock Market crash
The postwar economic boom ended and the Depression began. While women enjoyed their newfound freedoms, the optimism would not last.
