Lucy Diggs Slowe
Born on July 1, 1885, was the 1st African American female to win a national title in any sport when she won First Women's Title at the American Tennis Association's First tournament in 1917.
Not only was she an athlete but she was also one of the first founders of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority at Howard University. -

Things like first woman to swim across Lake Ontario or First woman to win Gran Slam in tennis. This time period was a time where females were the first of their kind to successfully accomplish a challange that may have been previously done by a male. -
Gertrude Ederle
First woman to swim the English Channel, Her record to swin the channel was 14 hours and 30 minutes for this all American competative swimmer. She joined the Womens Swimming Association at the age of 13. She was know as the "Queen of the Waves." -
The Amateur Athletic Union
The Amateur Athletic Union sponsors the first-ever national women's basketball championship using men's rules.
And in 1953 the US Womens Basketball Team wins the gold in the World Championships. -
Wilma Rudolph
First woman to win 3 Olympic Gold Medals in Track in Field at one of Olympic Game. Coming from a family of 22 she was able to take her family out of poverty. She first played basketball in High School where she was a star player. Then a Tennesse University Coach spotted her and encouraged her to joined their track and field team. -
Women Rowing
National Womens Rowing Association is founded. Rowing being one of the oldest sports, it was not until 1976 in Montreal that women were allowed to participate. Although is more common in the Eastern European countries, there are some great rowing teams coming out of the USA. -

She played for the Washington Mystics.
Currently she is playing for the San Antonio Silver Stars but she has also played for the Los Angeles Sparks and The Atlanta Dream. -
PAT SUMMIT
Tennessee Basketball Coach to get her 880th win and becomes the all time winningest coach in NCAA history, for male and female. She recently had her 1,000 victory. She was the only woman on the list for the "Top 50 Greatest Coaches of All Time in all sports" and has never has a losing season. -
