Parris has sent for Reverend Hale, who is an expert on witchcraft. He questions Abigail about dancing in the forest and she denies that the dancing was related to witchcraft.

The girls start accusing people of being witches.

The Proctor's servant returns from Salem with news about Elizabeth and reports that now 39 people stand accused.

Hale asks John Proctor to recite the Ten Commandments, he does it but forgets the commandment about adultery.

Proctor tells Mary that she has to testify in court and expose Abigail. She refuses, saying that Abigail will kill her if she does.

Mary tells the court that the girls are lying. Elizabeth is spared for a time because she is pregnant.

Abigail denies Mary’s testimony. The girls accuse Mary of bewitching them.

John Proctor confesses his affair with Abigail and explains that Elizabeth fired her when she discovered it.

Elizabeth lies to protect Proctor's honor, saying that he has not been unfaithful to her.

Mary accuses Proctor of being a witch, he rages and is finally arrested.

Proctor confesses to witchcraft and signs the paper.

When John finds out that they will nail the confession paper on the church door, he tears it up. Proctor and the other prisoners are led to the gallows.
