William Sherman Born in Lancaster, Ohio -
From West point right to war.
Studied at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. His first role in the Army was the Seminole war in Florida. -
Left Army
Left the army in 1853 for a banking firm in San Francisco but was unsuccessful -
Superintendent
Then with help of friends became superintendent of a new military Academy in Louisiana in 1859. -
Back to War
When Civil war broke out he resigned and with the help of his brother Senator John Sherman was given a colonel position under Irvin McDowell on august 7, 1861. -
Promotion!
Promoted to Brigadier General he was sent to Kentucky under General Robert Anderson on May 1, 1862. -
General!
Anderson Retired on October 28, 1863.So Sherman became General but was thought as insane by press. -
Breakdown!
Sherman had a complete mental breakdown and was replaced by General Don Carlos Buell on November 9, 1863. -
Back in action
Again with the help of another general, Sherman was sent to serve under Ulysses S. Grant, he Fought at Vicksburg and helped Grant gain control of the Mississippi River in April 16, 1864. -
Atlanta take over
With 100,000 men invited George and captured and burned Atlanta on September 24, 1864. -
March To The Sea
Then marched to the sea for savannah on December 21, 1864. -
Commander in Chief
He replaced Ulysses S. Grant as commander in Chief in 1873. -
His death
After serving 14 years and died in New York City on February 14th 1891.
