    William Shakespeare was born April 23rd, 1594 in Stratford-upon-Avon. He was born to John and Mary Arden Shakespeare. The date of which he was born is unknown but we know he was baptized on April 26th, and people back then were usually baptized 3 days after they were born. William Shakespeare was christened at the Holy Trinity Church in Startford on April 26th, 1594. (William.com). Baptism was very important to a child in the 1500's.

    William Shakespeare entered the King's New School, which was an excelent grammar school in Stratford. The school was located a few blocks away from Shakespeare's home. Here Shakespeare was well-prepared with the curriculum to go on to other creative works in later years. This school was as good as any other school in England. William learned his basic reading and writing skills here that would benefit him in years to come (Frye 10).

    From 1577 to 1580, Sir Francis Drake, a british explorer, led an expedition to sail around the world. Queen Elizabeth sent him out to circlr around South America, through the Straight of Magellan and to explore the coast beyond.     Roanoke Colony was founded in 1585 and it was the first English settlement of the New World. It was founded by Sir Walter Raleigh and is now present-day North Carolina. They soon left the colony on a ship in 1586. Later, Raleigh sent out another group of men to Roanoke and sent John White to go get supplies and come back. When White came back, the colony was desserted and there was no sign that anyone had ever been there before (History.com).

    In 1594, the poem "Lucrece" was published. This poem was regarded as sexually inflammatory because it dealt with rape. In the peom, the chaste Roman wife Lucrece was raped by Tarquin and committed suicide to escape her shame. Although this was a very controversial topic, this poem stablished Shakespeare as a morally serious poet (Folger.com).

This showed that publishers were reflecting the general Elizabethan disregard for modern drama as literature. This play displays many important themes, the most important being about gender roles.     On May 16th, 1599, the Globe Theatre was built south of the Thames River, on bankside in Southwark. The design of the theathre was written up by the Lord Chamberlain's men. This theatre was the home of Shakespeare's acting company. He was one of the four men that bought a share of the Globe Theatre when it was built. This theatre was running for 14 years and helped to present many of Shakespeare's plays (Frye 32).

    Some time between 1610 and 1613, William Shakespeare moved to London to be with his family. He retired in the spring of 1616 with a large amount of money from his share of the Globe Theatre. During that time of his retirement, he became ill with an illness that was not recorded. Since the plague and many other diseases were going around at that time, it could have been anything. On his 52nd birthday, William died and was buried at the Holy Trinity Church in Startford (Frye 36).
