William Golding was born in Newquay, England on September 19, 1911.

As a child, Golding would be described as a brat and he found peace in bullying and hurting people. He was raised in his grandparents' house.

After graduating college, Golding became a teacher in English and Philosophy.

After primary school, Golding went to Brasenose College in Oxford, to study at the Marlborough Grammar School. He graduated in 1935.

Golding met his wife, Ann Brookfield, in 1939. Ann was a chemist while Golding was a teacher. Even though they were both engaged at the time they met, they fell in love at first sight. About 5 months later, they got married and had a son named David.

In 1940, Golding decided to join the Royal Navy. During World War II, he fought battleships at the sinking of the Bismarck and also fended off submarines and planes. He was even in command of a rocked-launching craft.

Golding published one of his most popular books "Lord of the Flies," on September 17th, 1954. This was his first published book.

In 1983, Golding won a Nobel Prize for Literature. He won for his novels which made the literature world different.

In 1988, after winning the Nobel Prize, Golding was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

Golding died on June 19th, 1993 of congestive heart failure.
