William Golding was born on the 19th of September in the year 1911. He was born in Saint Columb Minor, Cornwall, England. -
Attempt to Write Novel
William unsuccessfully tried to write a novel at age 12. This was an outlet in bullying his peers. He described his childhood of him being a brat. -
First Published Work
A year before he graduated, William published his first book. It was a book of poems titled "poems". -
Became a Teacher
William decided to follow his father's footsteps and became a teacher. He became an English teacher and a philosophy teacher. -
Stopped Teaching and Joined the Royal Navy
In 1940, William temporarily stopped teaching to join the Royal Navy. He fought in world war 2 and was in the royal navy for 6 more years. -
Became a Teacher Again
After world war 2, William went back to teaching. Even though he loved to sail and loved the sea, he decided to teach English and be a writer. -
First and Most Acclaimed Novel Published
After 21 rejections, he published his first novel. This novel was titled, "Lord of The Flies" which is about a group of boys on a desserted island after a plane wreck. -
"Lord of the Flies" Movie
A year before this, Golding retired from teaching. Peter Brook made a movie adaption of William's book "Lord of the Flies". -
Noble Prize Winner
Golding was 73 when he won his first noble prize. The noble prize was awarded to him for literature. -
Knighted
Just 5 years later, Golding was knighted by England’s Queen Elizabeth II. -
New Film
A new version of Lord of the Flies Came out during spring of 1990. This new movie brought the book back to attention to readers. -
Golding's Death
During the summer of 1993, Golding passed away leaving his two children and wife. William died of a heart attack in Perranarworthal, Cornwall.
