William Golding was born on September 19, 1911. He was born in a 14th century home next to a graveyard located in Cornwell, England. -
Novel Attempt
William attempted to write his first book at twelve years old. He was unsuccessful, and found a different outlet which was bullying his peers. -
First Work
In 1934 William published his first work titled Poems. The collection of poems was overlooked by the critics. -
Graduation
In 1935 William graduated from Brasennose College at Oxford College. -
Teaching
Following his graduation he started searching for a job. He came to the decision of following in his father's footsteps. He became an English and philosophy teacher. -
War
In 1940 he abandoned teaching temporarily. He joined the Royal Navy and fought in World War II. -
End of War
The war ended in 1945. William went back and began teaching again. -
First Novel
In 1954 William wrote his first and most popular novel. The novel was titled Lord of The Files. -
Nobel Prize
At 73 years old Golding won the Nobel Prize for Literature. -
Death
Golding spent his last years living peacefully alongside his wife. He passed away on June 19, 1993, but his legacy still lives on today.
