Charlotte Whitney went to the communist convention in Chicago in 1919. She was a part of a radical Communist group called the communist labor party of America. -
Conviction
Whitney was arrested for violating the California criminal syndicalism act of 1919. This is because she was a member of the CLP, which advocated to overthrow the United States government. -
Politics
Due to ill health Whitney only served 11 days in prison. In 1924 she ran for state treasurer California on the Communist is balot and she got more than 100,000 votes. -
Appeal
Due to Whitney’s arrest that happened in 1919 she appealed her conviction which dragged on for 8 years. She was finally pardoned by the governor in June 1927. -
Back at it again with the crime
Whitney was later convicted in 1935 of passing out radical literature, lecturing without a permit, and falsely creating call me a selection petitions. This was a very against Lassens the communist party was trying to overthrow the US government. -
The Last Straw
In 1936 she was elected as the national chairman of the Communist. She later ran for a senate seat for California in 1950, but lost.
